As we enjoy the last vestiges of summer and welcome the autumn, here at CWM HQ, we’ve been reminiscing about this year’s summer weddings. While it’s now truer than ever that every season is wedding season, it’s undeniable that this is still the most popular pick. The weather can be somewhat more reliable, and this gorgeous county is looking its very best. For me, summer speaks to lazing about with a picnic, barbecues, warm evenings enjoyed al fresco, and day trips with friends – it’s a vibe! If the same rings true for you, did you know these are all things you can include in your wedding day? When it comes to food, get creative and ditch the formal seating plan in favour of an informal setup with grazing feasts or a hearty barbecue served in your venue’s grounds. Indeed, we highly recommend opting for a venue with glorious gardens or super-cute courtyard with Med-style atmosphere at this time of year, purely because of the opportunities it affords you in terms of making the most of those long evenings. Think cosy firepits, blankets in case it does get a bit chilly, and heaps of charming festoon lighting. Meanwhile, if you love nothing more than getting away for an adventure with friends, why not turn your wedding into a weekend away with your closest cohort? Many local venues offer two- to threeday hire allowing you to get settled the night before, enjoy a delicious meal together before celebrating the big day and rounding out the weekend with a morning-after breakfast together. Having said this, September, while officially the start of autumn, is still a terrific time to tie the knot. More often than not we tend to experience an Indian Summer earlier on in the month, while the evenings are generally more bearable temperature-wise. It’s a great opportunity to embrace the best of both seasons. So, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning! The year marks an incredible period of growth for the family vineyards having won top international awards at the 2025 IWSC and Decanter World Wine Awards, a testament to the quality of the Sussex vineyards and winemaking craft. The Leonardslee Family Vineyard encapsulates the extraordinary journey of owner, Penny Streeter OBE. Once living in homeless accommodation, Penny’s story is a modern-day Cinderella tale. The wine bottles’ labels, designed by local Sussex artist Will Parr, depict a swallow signifying Penny’s migration from South Africa to England, emblematic of her resilience and determination. Buxted Park Hotel, nestled in the heart of East Sussex, offers a quintessentially English setting for weddings. A Grade II Palladian mansion built in 1722, this grand residence is blessed with 312 acres of lush parkland, featuring lakes, rolling hills and manicured gardens. On entering, you’re met with equally charming features such as original fireplaces, large sash windows and decorative cornicing throughout its spacious guest areas and master suites. Your Sussex Wedding editor Kelly Andrews recently had the opportunity to visit this showstopping venue and experience it in action. WHERE TO WED You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to where to wed at this wonderful period property. The Orangery, Ballroom, Coat of Arms Lounge, and Library each offer their own unique atmosphere to suit the vibe of your day and guest list. With each space expertly adorned in beautiful blooms by Tony Dunn Flowers (tonydunnflowers.co.uk) I was thrilled to experience each space as it would look on a wedding day and they really didn’t disappoint. An original part of the Georgian building, the Orangery (100 ceremony, 70 wedding breakfast guests) is flooded with natural light and boasts stunning views over the lawns and fishing lake – perfect for allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds. It suits a variety of table layouts and on the day was demonstrating the oh-so on trend serpentine setup, now regularly requested by the venue’s couples. Meanwhile, the magnificent Ballroom (120 wedding breakfast, 200 evening guests) was a sight to behold with its five sparkling Empire Romantic, Georgian splendour Our editor reports back on two glorious days spent experiencing the beauty East Sussex’s Buxted Park has to offer its couples 20

chandeliers and five full length Georgian sash windows resplendent with the room dressed in its wedding finery. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy access to your own private terraced area framed by the building’s Palladian pillars. Located at the heart of the Hotel is The Coat of Arms Lounge (120 ceremony guests), which features a grand, original fireplace dating back to the 18th century. The glass panelled door, flanked by more of those huge period windows, leads out onto the vast lawns, lush and green as far as the eye can see. You can also say “I do” al fresco here, as the two of you stand at the top of the steps, with up 120 guests looking on from the lawn. Every detail in The Library (50 ceremony guests) has been delicately designed and crafted from the intricate stone fireplace to the authentic bookcase. You and your loved ones will feel as though you’ve been transported back to a bygone era when gathered in this intimate space. Further al fresco options are available among the glorious grounds on the Orangery Lawn or pond each offering the dream romantic setting for up to 120 guests. SUITE MEMORIES I immediately fell in love with my room, especially the terrace complete with table and chairs where I was able to relax and take in the gardens as well as the impressive scene of the porticoed building. While many venues are proud to offer you one gorgeous bridal suite, Buxted Park can offer you the choice of six! Each has its own individual character, history and features and won’t fail to impress. Rather than staying the night in a hotel, you’ll feel like the guest of nobility in their country stately home and will be treated as such! Making a decision about where to spend the first night of your married life will be tricky with each suite as incredible as the last, so I highly recommend exploring the suites online, or requesting a tour of each before you take your pick. If my life depended on choosing a favourite, I’d opt for the Robert Browning Suite for its sheer uniqueness. Offering an unforgettable, decadent experience, it features a striking fourposter bed, dark wood furniture, and deep rich plum hued silk wall coverings. What’s more, the suite’s seating area is perfectly situated for you to enjoy the beautiful views of the grounds. TIME TO DINE For dinner, my fellow guests and I gathered in the bar for cocktails – espresso Martini or a refreshing rhubarb sour – before heading into the private dining room for an intimate evening meal. We indulged in a Mediterraneanstyle sharing feast inspired by the home of the owner’s vineyard in Tuscany. This style of modern social wedding dining is available here at Buxted Park if formal three-course fare isn’t for you. Dinner was served with Villa Saletta wines straight from the aforementioned Tuscan vineyard owned by Handpicked Hotels’ Hands family since 2000. When the family purchased the estate, it had fallen almost entirely into ruin, but they saw the potential to combine traditional Tuscan techniques with modern technology, while ensuring their output was grounded in the heritage of the estate. The resulting wines are delightfully light and flavourful, with something to marry perfectly whatever you choose to eat. Ideal as a morning-after, hangover tackling treat for those staying over with you, it’s furnished with cosy sofas to relax in if those dancing feet are still sore. We were treated to a delicious afternoon tea here during our stay, while Mamma Mia played on the big screen. •Guest portraits While we mingled in the bar pre-dinner Hues Wedding Artistry painted our portraits ( @lorrainehughesart, @graceful.edgeartistry). A classy alternative to a caricaturist, this provides ample entertainment as your guests watch the artists at work, and a wedding keepsake to take away and treasure. •The getting ready room Offering all the mod cons for your morning preparations, Buxted Park’s getting ready room is a comfortable place complete with dressing tables and mirrors, plus its own lounge area for chilling with your best gals as you’re being pampered and prepared. •Snooker room The bride and her party are treated to somewhere special to gather their nerves, why shouldn’t the gents as well? On the ground floor, there’s a spacious snooker room for the groom and his party to gather pre-ceremony. Settle those emotions with a game or two before heading out to begin the anxious wait at the end of the aisle! •The Crystal Bar I’ve already mentioned how wonderful the drinks menu is here from wine to cocktails. My highlight was the elderflower spritz I was welcomed with, which would make a perfect drinks reception beverage on a warm day. Pssst... Meesha and Lewis styled their day in hues of the bride’s favourite colour Images courtesy of Elizabeth Ruby Photography Amber SUNSET REAL WEDDING 23

Meesha and Lewis met at work as newly qualified pharmacists starting on the same day. “We bonded quickly over our coffee breaks together and our friendship grew into a relationship,” Lewis shares. Six months after buying their first home together, the couple decided to take a walk around their new village. While pausing by the duck pond, Lewis got down on one knee and asked Meesha to marry him. The couple wanted to get married locally in Sussex, as it’s where they both grew up. They viewed numerous venues together but found themselves comparing each one to Southend Barns. They soon realised Southend Barns had everything they wanted in a wedding venue and promptly secured their date – 14th September 2024. Join us the bride tells us more... SETTING THE SCENE Having attended numerous weddings, the couple understood how important it was to be able to spend time together on such a big day, so they opted for a sweetheart table. “This allowed us to reflect on the day’s events so far, while being able to look out and see everyone we knew and loved. It was really special,” Meesha says. Southend Barns provided the floral centrepieces to match the Amber Sunset theme, they were also used to decorate the aisle. The bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets were created by Jane Walker at Forge Flowers. “My favourite colour is orange and Jane was able to “Six-foot-five Lewis was driven to the venue by his dad in his classic Mini. I’m still not sure how they managed it!” – Meesha 24

incorporate various hues into the arrangement,” Meesha explains. Meesha made the place names herself and included a message on the inside thanking each guest for coming on behalf of the happy couple. The table names featured cities the couple had holidayed in together including a selfie shot of the two of them in that destination. The venue offered a six-tier cheese tower, which the couple opted for. It was presented as part of the evening buffet with crackers, figs and grapes, and was loved by all assembled. Southend Barns’ catering team, Roots, hosted an open evening for its couples, who were treated to the wedding guest experience. “We were welcomed with drink options and sampled various canapés,” Meesha explains. “From there we were taken through to the main barn where each table was set up with a different theme, which is what helped us decide on the Amber Sunset palette.” As a result of the evening, the couple decided on a summer barbecue for their wedding breakfast. For those with dietary requirements, all food options were adapated allowing everyone to enjoy the meal. “Our guests still rave about the pork belly nuggets,” Meesha tells us. LOOKING THE PART The bride wore a traditional red lehenga during the ceremony before changing into a white wedding dress for the reception. “Traditionally, Indians wear red to get married in and I wanted to bring a part of my culture to our day,” Meesha explains. She also had henna applied to her hands, in another nod to her roots. Lewis was dressed in a navy tailored suit with contrasting grey waistcoat and burgundy tie, while the groomsmen and his dad all wore navy suits with navy waistcoats, plus the same tie as the groom. The bridesmaids looked gorgeous in their teal blue saris with colour coordinating bangles. 25 REAL WEDDING

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I’ll never forget the moment when I first heard the music and finally saw Meesha walking down the aisle to meet me,” Lewis tells us. For Meesha, the highlight was walking into the wedding breakfast having been announced as Mr and Mrs. “I’ll never forget the feeling and realising after all the planning we were finally married,” she says. 27 REAL WEDDING

Jenny and Ben said “I do” at beautiful Boxgrove Priory followed by celebrations at The Crate and Apple in Chichester Images courtesy of Raksmey Photography Jenny and Ben initially met at their Christian youth group, but it wasn’t until years later when they reconnected and found themselves spending nearly all their time together that they started dating. “We never would have guessed all those years ago that we ever would have started dating and eventually be married, but here we are now!” Jenny says. Ben proposed at the top of Beachy Head. Eastbourne is a place dear to the couple’s hearts as they both have fond memories of the times Ben would go to visit Jenny at university there. “I could tell Ben was nervous on the day, so I did suspect something, but it still felt like a huge surprise when he got down on one knee!” Jenny remembers. “For us, choosing Boxgrove Priory for our ceremony was a no brainer,” the bride continues. “My parents also married there and attended the church, so I always knew this was where I wanted to tie the knot. As Christians, it was important to us that we married in church, somewhere we felt God’s presence, so it was absolutely perfect.” For their reception, the couple opted for Crate and Apple in Chichester. Being close to where they live it was convenient for all. Read on as the Jenny shares more of her memories from the big day and the run up... Love is... REAL WEDDINGS 29

My highlight of the day was walking down the aisle. I’d always felt daunted by the prospect, hating the idea of all eyes being on me, but I actually felt such joy in that moment. Seeing Ben at the end of the aisle was the best feeling of my life. Also, entering to the theme to Downton Abbey was fantastic! Ben chose a comfortable suit, ideal for the summer. We were originally planning on black suits but felt the beige shade we ultimately went for suited Ben and his colouring perfectly. I wore Jacky by Justin Alexander, which I fell in love with. It was the last dress I tried on but I very nearly didn’t! I knew it was the one when I didn’t want to take it off and imagining Ben seeing me in it made me emotional. 30
