It’s one of my favourites to write, and I always get excited seeing the stunning dresses that are available in our lovely region. I got married a few years ago, so I know how stressful finding the perfect dress can be. I had no idea what style I wanted, but my wonderful consultant helped me pick my dream A-line gown. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of choice available, make sure you listen to your consultant. They have years of experience and have helped brides of every shape and size find their dream gown, so they will know what looks good on you even if you don’t yourself. Go to your appointment with a rough idea of what you like, but try to keep an open mind. On paper, it might not be what you want, but it might still be the one. Making Sarah and James tied the knot at Penarth Pier Pavilion in front of their friends and family Images courtesy of Neil Pomeroy Sarah and James met at a bar in 2015. “I’d decided to have a spontaneous drink with one of my good friends, Jess, after work,” says Sarah. “It’s fair to say that Jess had a few too many to drink by the time we met James. I was ordering drinks and when I turned around, I saw an overly sociable Jess had started chatting with James’ friends. One of his friends pointed James out to me and asked if I was single. I’d sworn off men at that point and Jess was engaged, but we continued to chat and eventually I got talking to James. I could tell he was a very kind, interesting and intelligent soul and we got on well immediately.” James proposed in 2019 in their kitchen. “We’d discussed getting married previously, but as we’d bought a house and had our son Oscar, things took a bit longer than usual,” shares the bride. “We’d actually chosen the ring together beforehand, but it had been locked away until James had asked for my dad’s permission. It’s safe to say we’ve done things pretty backwards, but it’s worked out perfectly.” Read on to hear some of Sarah’s favourite moments from their big day... WAVES REAL WEDDINGS 31
For our wedding cake, we chose a baroque style with lots of beautiful gold decoration. We’ve both grown up visiting Penarth Pier and my grandparents were lifelong members of the Penarth Motorpoint and Sailing Club. Both of our dad’s have owned boats in Penarth and we’ve always spent a lot of time around there. We love being by the coast and wanted a venue that would be easy for most of our guests to get to. We knew Penarth Pier Pavilion had been renovated over the years, so we organised a tour with Karen, the manager. We instantly fell in love with the place. The beautiful entrance hall, bar area and side room, the main hall and the room upstairs that overlooks the whole of the pier and coast were just perfect for what we had in mind. Karen was lovely and explained everything very clearly, so we always knew we were in good hands. James and I wanted everything to have a vintage feel. For our favours, we gave our guests laser-cut navy and gold baroque boxes filled with chocolate mints and some old-fashioned sweets. We also love Baileys, so we gave each person their own miniature liquor. I wanted a car that was big enough to take my parents, the pageboys and flowergirl and their mum to the venue, so we chose a vintage-style cream and black wedding bus from iDoo Wedding Cars Ltd. I made a wedding stand for behind the ceremony table, which was later moved behind the top table. It was decorated with crystals, pearls and glass baubles that contained candles. Our centrepieces were artificial flowers chosen to match the invitations. 32
My dress was called Jin by Enzoani. I chose it because of the colour, the lace and the tiny pearls. I also wore a champagne-coloured dress in the evening from Goddiva. After leaving the house and getting half way down the road, my dad pointed out that I didn’t have my bouquet. We had to turn the wedding bus around and go back for it, making us half an hour late. It was quite funny because the neighbours had waved us off, so my dad was saying, “wrong day!” trying to be funny. James chose a dinner suit, which consisted of a navy velvet jacket, black trousers and a shirt with black buttons. We hired Los Gitanos Kings, an Andalusian band from London, to keep our guests entertained. They were amazing! They played our first dance song and all of our guests joined in. During the ceremony, my sister-in-law did a reading and my friend Hannah read a poem. It made the ceremony more personal and special for us and it was great to see our friends and family getting involved. We both felt nervous and excited, but we were so glad to finally be husband and wife after everything we’ve been through together.
