Congratulations The Welsh National Wedding Awards, now in its 15th year, shines a light on the incredible Welsh wedding industry, with categories ranging from Best Bridal Retailer to Best Venue. Throughout the summer, thousands of votes were cast by couples and their families, who took time out of their busy lives to thank the suppliers that helped make their dream day extra special. Almost 400 shortlisted businesses from every region of Wales attended the Welsh National Wedding Awards ceremony at Brangwyn Hall. The event was opened by awards founder Jessica Rice, who then handed proceedings over to broadcaster and mental health activist Matt Johnson. Jessica said, “Having hosted the Welsh National Wedding Awards for 15 years, we are passionate about shining a light on the industry, recognising and celebrating suppliers from every corner of Wales — many of whom work incredibly long hours, providing exceptional services for a day that will be one of the most special in a couple’s lives together.” To find out more, visit welshnationalweddingawards.co.uk Just opened SK:N Clinics, one of the UK’s leading skin and dermatology specialists, is delighted to announce the launch of its newest clinic in the heart of Swansea. To identify Europe’s most magical castles, they compiled a shortlist of 50 locations and created a “Secluded Score,” with higher scores indicating greater remoteness and a more peaceful experience. Caernarfon Castle ranked among the most secluded, with a score of 46. Cerys Keneally from South Wales embraced this trend, bringing her fairytale to life with a dream castle wedding at Craig Y Nos Castle. Visit avis.co.uk for more information. The brand specialises in couture wedding gowns that are handmade with precision and artistry. Each dress reflects the individuality and unique style of its brides, offering a bespoke experience that elevates wedding fashion. Wedding entertainment for couples who care about the atmosphere. Sound and lighting, delivered with experience and attention to detail. www.djsoundandlighting.co.uk Celebrating Welsh success with heart DJ Sound & Lighting is a much-loved Welsh wedding entertainment company built on one simple idea: create nights people never forget. The team’s reputation has been repeatedly recognised, earning Best Wedding DJ in Wales not only in 2025 but also in 2024, along with Best Regional Wedding DJ for an impressive eight consecutive years. In 2025, they celebrated two major wins at the Welsh National Wedding Awards – Best Regional Wedding DJ and the overall Best Wedding DJ in Wales. “These awards matter so much because they’re voted for by the couples, venues, and suppliers we’re lucky enough to work with,” says founder Darren Tipples. “It’s their trust that keeps us growing.” The business began modestly – a teenager with a passion, a homemade setup, and parents willing to endure the noise. Darren’s early gigs were youth clubs, school discos, and any event where he could plug in a speaker. “My dad always said that service is what people remember most,” he adds. “Three decades later, that’s still the heart of everything we do.” Today, DJ Sound & Lighting is known for warm, peoplefocused service, packed dancefloors, and thoughtful production that fits each couple’s style. Darren credits the team for the company’s success: “They’re the reason each weekend feels special. Their reliability, creativity, and genuine care make all the difference. “Winning two national awards in one night was incredible,” he says. “But the real reward is being invited into the biggest days of people’s lives.” Visit djsoundandlighting.co.uk to find out more about DJ Sound & Lighting. ELEGANCE Rustic Leah and Simon opted for a moss green colour palette for their nuptials at Llanerch Images courtesy of Geraint Roberts Photography Leah and Simon met at school, but after losing contact, they later reconnected through a dating app. Leah tells us, “We always laugh about the fact that modern romance can start with a swipe – proof that finding your lifelong partner can happen in the most unexpected ways.” Simon proposed in August 2019 at Symonds Yat, one of the couple’s favourite spots overlooking the river. He brought a picnic hamper filled with Leah’s favourite foods and a bottle of bubbly to celebrate. It was an intimate and meaningful moment that was perfect for them. The couple chose Llanerch as their venue. Leah explains, “It felt personal and homely without being over the top. Their team made everything stress-free, and the food and wine packages were included, which took the pressure out of planning.” She especially loved the transition from The Calon Lodge to the marquee for the wedding breakfast. The vineyard surroundings were stunning, and the couple loved enjoying wines grown on-site. From the very first visit, they knew the setting perfectly matched the atmosphere they wanted for their day. Leah adds, “It’s also a place we can return to for afternoon tea, drinks, or overnight stays, which makes it extra special. The fact that it’s dog-friendly meant our chihuahua, Lilly, could join us too.” They chose a rustic elegance theme with a moss green colour palette to reflect the venue’s surroundings. “We incorporated lots of greenery, pampas grass, eucalyptus, and white roses,” shares Leah. “Be Our Guest styled the venue and created our signage, making the process simple and enjoyable with their wide range of options.” For their food, the couple enjoyed a menu prepared by Llanerch paired with wines produced at the vineyard. Leah continues, “It was a wonderful way to enjoy food and drink that were both local and memorable.” Leah wore an Elysee gown from Eva Ashley Bridal Lounge in Tonypandy. She knew it was the one as soon as she tried on the full-lace, long-sleeved design and felt truly bridal. Simon opted for a classic black three-piece tuxedo, while the groomsmen matched in identical suits. The bridesmaids wore green satin cowl-neck dresses from Six Stories, perfectly complementing the overall theme. “Llanerch gave guests the freedom to relax and enjoy the day,” recalls Leah. “Entertainment included a live band called Sir Juke in the early evening, followed by plenty of drinks and dancing. Since it was the hottest day of the year, our guests also made use of the outdoor vineyard spaces. For me, the highlight of the day was marrying my best friend, but an unforgettable moment was when our photographer, Geraint Roberts, suggested we have our first dance in the vineyard at sunset. It felt completely private, like it was just the two of us, and it created the most magical photographs.” Leah and Simon’s top tips for wedding planning include starting early, as suppliers get booked up quickly. Leah adds, “Don’t overthink the small details or worry about what others think – the day is about the two of you. Avoid overspending on tiny touches because guests won’t notice them. Instead, focus on staying present and spending the day together as bride and groom. Take in every moment, because the day goes by far too quickly.” REAL WEDDINGS 25

sweethearts Childhood Sophie and Hywel’s love story was years in the making Images courtesy of Carl Woodward Photography REAL WEDDINGS 33

Sophie and Hywel met in school when they were 16. They sat together in science class and became closer, which led to Hywel asking Sophie to go to prom with him. Sophie tells us, “We spent all summer talking and made it official on bonfire night and have been inseparable ever since.” Hywel proposed in September 2022 during a holiday in Cape Verde. They were celebrating purchasing a house together and wanted a short break before moving in and dealing with all the stress that comes with it. Sophie continues, “Hywel wanted a beach proposal and was checking the weather all week to get a nice, clear sunset. Halfway along the beach, which was completely deserted, Hywel got on one knee and popped the question. I thought it was a joke at first as I was in shock! After the proposal, we went back to the hotel and booked into one of the upmarket restaurants for a celebratory dinner.” The happy couple both attended Swansea University and moved into a flat on the marina, making Swansea their home. “We would often spend weekends down at the various beaches and had gone to Oxwich Bay many times,” recalls the bride. “We would frequently call into the Oxwich Bay Hotel for Sunday lunch after a walk on the beach. Many years later, when we were looking to book our wedding venue, we decided to go see Oxwich Bay Hotel. When we got there, it just felt right. Sophie from the hotel was amazing and worked so hard to make the day special! Nothing was too much effort and she was so friendly.” Sophie and Hywel opted for a botanical terracotta theme for their big day. Sophie explains, “Hywel’s mother decided a year or two before the wedding that she would provide the flowers. Having little experience but a very good eye for detail and décor, she started going to college weekly for a floristry course! She spent an evening a week learning how to do all sorts of floral arrangements.” REAL WEDDINGS 35

To tie in with their theme, the couple hired ivory drapes with fairylights from The Wedding Business to decorate the ceiling of the marquee. They chose terracotta vases for the tables and pots for the favours, filled with sunflower seeds. To incorporate their beloved pooch into their day, Sophie and Hywel used pictures of her at their favourite beaches as table names and displayed a painting of her on their card table. “We wanted our confetti to be eco-friendly, and so for the year leading up to the wedding, we asked Hywel’s nan to dry out flowers for us,” recalls Sophie. “She took this role seriously and had dried several boxes full. She even got her friends involved! They looked amazing on the day, and they were everywhere.” Sophie’s wedding dress was style 1510 from Martina Liana. It was the first dress she tried, and nothing compared to it. Hywel chose a three-piece suit from Hawkes Bespoke Outfitters, with matching versions for the groomsmen. The couple’s guests were not short of entertainment. Sophie tells us, “Hywel’s brother and cousin choreographed a dance routine to kick off the wedding party entrance into the ceremony. For the service, we hired a singer from The Midnight Fiddle Band. She had a perfect voice and sang as we walked down the aisle. After our wedding breakfast, before the speeches, everyone was feeling a little full and sluggish. At this point, Hywel’s mother had secretly booked two singing waiters to lift the energy in the room! This was the perfect mood-lifter we needed and was a total surprise to us, which made it even better. In the evening, The Midnight Fiddle Band performed with our daytime singer. They brought some high-energy dancing to the room with modern covers and sing-along classics with a fiddle twist, which had us all dancing the night away.” 36

We asked Elina what piece of advice she would give couples to help their day run smoothly and look great in photos. She shared her expert insight: “If you start to feel nervous or a little awkward in front of the camera, the best thing you can do is turn toward each other and reconnect. Hold hands, share a touch, lean in – anything that brings you back into the moment together. Your body language shifts the second you focus on each other instead of the camera. And remember: your photos will reflect the energy of your day. If you’re soaking it all in and genuinely enjoying yourselves, that joy will naturally shine through in every image.” Find out more about EDIT Photography and its services at editphotography.co.uk. Natural beauty How to plan your ceremony around the landscape Outdoor weddings have blossomed in popularity in recent years. Since the pandemic, many couples have found comfort, romance and a sense of freedom in the open air — and who could blame them? Nature offers the chance to exchange vows on a sun-kissed beach, beneath whispering woodland canopies, or even in the intimacy of your own garden. Here, we explore three popular outdoor settings, beaches, forests and marquees, and the key things to consider when planning your own al fresco celebration. LOVE BY THE SHORE We’re truly spoiled in South Wales, surrounded by beautiful beaches seemingly made for dreamy seaside ceremonies. If you’re imagining vows framed by soft sand and rolling waves, a few practicalities are worth keeping in mind – starting with the weather. The UK is famously unpredictable, and strong winds, high tides or a sudden downpour can quickly interrupt your perfect moment. High tide may shrink your ceremony space, while low tide can reveal seaweed or rocks that aren’t ideal for photos. Always have a backup plan: by all means dream of the beach wedding you’ve always wanted, but is there a sheltered space nearby if the weather turns? Think, too, about the nature of your chosen beach. Is it a busy public spot filled with families, or a quieter stretch of coastline? Some coastal venues offer the best of both worlds, beach access with added privacy, and can guide you on timings, secluded locations and logistics. Facilities are also crucial. Are there toilets nearby? Is there shade for children, elderly guests or anyone sensitive to the heat? Consider parasols, fans, plenty of water or welcome kits with sunscreen, flip-flops and towels. DRESSED for FOREVER Choose attire that suits the setting. Light, breathable fabrics like linen, chiffon or organza are ideal, and a shorter hem or detachable train will make moving across the sand easier. With wind and sea air at play, plan for hair and makeup touch-ups, and choose styles that can handle a breeze. Footwear matters too: your stunning six-inch heels may be perfect for the reception, but not for soft sand. Save them for later and choose something practical for the ceremony. Nature’s perfect aisle When it comes to décor, practicality matters. Your dream chairs may look beautiful on your moodboard, but soft sand can make some styles unstable and no one wants to be chasing furniture down the beach! Opt for sturdy seating and dress it with thoughtful details. Let the natural beauty of the landscape do most of the work. Soft florals, simple arches and minimal styling create a setting that feels elegant and effortless. Pastels and earthy tones always work beautifully, while deep ocean blues or tropical greens can add richness against the sandy backdrop. If you’re hosting your whole day on the beach, celebrate the setting with fresh, seasonal dishes. Tropical signature cocktails can add a playful touch. Keep sustainability in mind with low-waste options, donating leftovers where possible and ensuring all rubbish is collected at the end of the evening. unsplash.com/@infectedluna unsplash.com/@jonathanborba LOVE IN EVERY NOTE Consider the soundtrack of your ceremony. Waves can be surprisingly loud, so while the front row may hear your vows clearly, guests further back might struggle. Visit the beach around the time of day you plan to marry and listen for sound challenges. If you need amplification, think about speaker placement or ask your venue for guidance. Live music is magical by the sea – think acoustic guitar, gentle jazz or a small band. If you’re using speakers or lighting, plan ahead for power sources. As the sun sets, create a romantic glow with firepits, lanterns and strings of lights. unsplash.com/@infectedluna OUTDOOR WEDDINGS 41
