COUNTRY HOUSE RETREAT Small enough to be intimate, but large enough to host even the grandest of big days, Montigo Resorts at Charlton House’s Regency period estate awaits Moments away from the rolling hills of Frome, Wells and Glastonbury in the idyllic market town of Shepton Mallet, lies welcoming country house and spa retreat, Montigo Resorts Somerset at Charlton House. Dating back to the early 1600s, it’s said that the King of Thailand and the Duke of Edinburgh often graced its oak floorboards. Much more recently our editor, Kelly Andrews, had the opportunity to visit and check out what the venue has in store for its wedding couples. CHECK IN AND CHILL OUT The holistic wellness spa brings Asian wellness to the heart of Somerset. Dedicated to restoring the body’s balance through centuries-old therapies, accentuated by the ambient infusion of soothing fragrances and light, its healing therapies focus on human touch, supplemented by traditional instruments, organic ingredients, oils, and natural scents. You and your loved ones will relish the opportunity for some well-deserved R&R here to soothe the nerves ahead of the big day. There’s even a dedicated treatment room for couple’s massages. My mum settled in for a pampering gel manicure with Katie, while I was treated to the incredible 60-minute facial by beauty therapist Keeley with Natural Spa Factory products, which really helped to soothe and rejuvenate my dry skin. The highlight for me was the facial and head massage as well as the ice globes; so much so, I’m currently looking into investing in the latter for myself! I adore the spa here, not least due to the advanced swim-in, swim-out facilities plus hydrotherapy pool, steam rooms, hot tub, plunge pool and modern fitness facilities. It offers the ideal balance of indoor and al-fresco relaxation opportunities. With ample opportunity to lounge by the pool in comfort, I found the perfect place to chill with my book in between dips. I didn’t want to leave, but cocktails and dinner were calling! “This pet-friendly venue is home to an on-site pet-spa so your fur baby can be spoiled to morning wedding preparations as you enjoy yours!” SOMERSET’S FINEST Tucked away in the kitchen gardens of a historical English country estate, Tiigo promises to deliver a memorable al-fresco dining experience where the vibrant flavours of the East meet the timeless charm of the seventeenthcentury property. This pan-Asian restaurant and bar radiates a laid-back, tropical atmosphere. Here, you’re welcome to relax, sip, and savour authentic dishes from around the world making it the perfect spot for your hen party. Every Saturday Tiigo’s chefs fire up the grill with mouth-watering dishes, so whether you and your best gals are looking to unwind or celebrate over cocktails you’ll find the atmosphere welcoming with a vacay-vibe. We dined at the more formal Charlton House Restaurant where it’s possible to sample the best Somerset has to offer with an Asian twist, inspired by the venue’s new owners. It’s a bit like Marmite, but I never pass up the opportunity to order steak tartar and the restaurant’s Asianinspired version with cured egg yolk, pickled radish and parmesan was a real treat. For main, I opted for the wild mushroom risotto with aromatic truffle oil. Decadent but not overpoweringly rich, it was velvety and delicious. I concluded my meal with the chocolate delice served with yummy honeycomb, caramel and miso ice cream. Not yet ready to make our way to bed, we popped into the cosy lounge for a cocktail and I found myself tempted to stash away the cute pineapple-shaped glass in my handbag when I’d finished my pina colada! Before we headed off the next day, I enjoyed the most indulgent Sunday roast imaginable washed down with an Aperol Spritz in the sun. The packed-to-the-brim plate was almost too much for me, and trust me, that’s saying something! ROOM TO REST Each of the 28 bedrooms here is individually designed and decorated to complement the historical property’s original, charming architecture. I was comfortably situated in the East Wing – yes that’s right, my very own wing! One of the hotel’s family suites, it boasts a spacious double bedroom with lounge area and connecting twin room. The bathroom was decadent with roll-top bath and walk in shower, complete with premium brand Elemis toiletries. I loved the enclosed balcony where you can sit and enjoy the view of the glorious gardens. WHERE TO WED The Orangery, blessed with an abundance of natural light, makes a fine backdrop indeed for your “I dos.” Packed with Regency features it’s a stately home location befitting such a grand occasion. If an al-fresco ceremony is what you dream of, the light-dappled orchard is a beautiful spot for this part of the day. Meanwhile, the bright and botanical conservatory is the ideal location for your wedding breakfast. The wedding team’s philosophy is built on customisation and excellence, so they’ll delight in helping you create the day of your dreams. The venue also offers exclusive use meaning you’ll have full run of all rooms, restaurants and gorgeous grounds. Loved ones can stay over on your wedding night as well as the night before should you wish. You’ll also be able to enjoy spa and gym access together as standard. Having said that, the Orangery is nicely tucked away, so you’ll still be able to enjoy your privacy if you’re unable to go for the exclusive use.
