Why documentary? There are two main types of wedding photographers: documentary and editorial. The documentary type focuses mainly on capturing authentic moments in an artistic way, while the editorial approach is to stage things, to pose, taking you out of the moment to get the perfect magazine-worthy picture. I’m here to tell you that these two approaches are very often used by the same photographer on a wedding day. The bride is asked over to a window for a lipstick touch-up and a portrait holding her bouquet. The groom is asked to take off his jacket and put it back on while standing in the shade. But the ceremony is candidly documented without intrusion. The couple’s portraits are staged, directed, and curated. The speeches are silently snapped by a stealthy ninjatographer without blocking the view of the guests. The cake is cut to a countdown from the DJ. The first dance is caught from over the shoulders of the audience or crouched in front of them, with a little flash now and then. The party ensues. In between all this, the documentary photographer does what they do best: hunting for smiles, happy tears, cuddles, laughter, moments shared between all these people, on this special day.
