Modern love Gen Z and the rise of prenups WIN! A HONEYMOON IN JOHANNESBURG NORTH WEST WEDDING JUL/AUG 2026 £3.55 NEW RULES Marvellous Manchester and Merseyside Rewriting the traditional hen and stag celebration
We’ve already had the hottest May day on record, so we could be in for a scorcher of a summer! Whether you love the heat or loathe it, it’s important to factor in the effects of the sun when planning your dream day. While rain can be an inconvenience, it’s actually the sun that can do the most damage. With so much going on, it’s easy to forget the things you’d ordinarily do as second nature. So, make a conscious effort to stay well hydrated throughout the day. This is important for your guests too. Bubbly is lovely, but balancing the booze with plenty of water will ensure everyone stays safe and well. If you’re marrying or celebrating al fresco, gift your guests fans, parasols, sunglasses and suncream as they arrive. Or for a more sustainable approach, encourage them to bring their own in your invitations. Be sure to pack these essentials for yourself too. Additionally, ensure there’s enough shade to protect everyone from the sun’s rays. Just a little extra thought ahead of time will mean you’re all comfortable and able to enjoy every moment. I hope you’re able to pick up plenty of inspiration and tips from this issue. So, enjoy and keeeep planning! Plus, Lewis and Eve will stay in a junior suite on the night of their wedding. “It’s fair to say we’ve had a tough couple of years, but we’ve got through it together and winning our wedding has taken a great deal of pressure off us,” Eve shares. “We’re now able to spend the money we saved on additional items for the wedding that we didn’t think we’d be able to afford.” The couple have booked their wedding for September. in love LESSONS Anna and Kalvin said “I do” at The University of Manchester, a place dear to the bride’s heart Images courtesy of Fish2 Photography Kalvin proposed to Anna during a friend’s wedding with the full blessing of the happy couple. The moment was planned to take place during the wedding photos, when only the close friendship group remained. Kalvin took Anna completely by surprise. “I can’t remember a word he said,” Anna laughs. But thankfully the answer was “yes”. Anna has a long-standing connection with the University of Manchester. She was born and raised in the city and completed her undergraduate studies and master’s degree at the University. She later began working there, just down the road from Whitworth Hall and its iconic arch. “We both thought it would make a truly memorable venue,” Kalvin explains. “We loved the grand, historical atmosphere of the place. We could picture our wedding photos beneath the arch and were drawn to the character of Christie’s Bistro with the books lining the walls. The Old Quad was recently refurbished too, so it offered a beautiful outdoor space.” So, with the date set, the couple moved on to planning the finer details. They chose a deep, rich palette of dark green and red and, with the help of their venue stylist, set about bringing their vision to life. The day’s food was supplied by the University’s catering team and featured a choice of wedding breakfast starters: Parma ham and sun-blushed tomato tart with potato, herb and black olive salad or roasted red pepper, courgette and feta cheese bruschetta with lemon and mint vinaigrette. For the main course, guests could choose between pan-seared breast of chicken with seared mushrooms, served with truffle, champ, tenderstem broccoli and mushroom cream sauce, or mushroom, spinach and blue cheese pithivier served with buttered new potatoes and a seasonal salad. Dessert was a delightful rhubarb flavoured egg custard tart. Hot sandwiches and potato wedges were served in the evening when tummies started to rumble once more. The groom was dressed to impress in Bromley, an olivegreen check three-piece suit by Marc Darcy, and his party wore navy or black suits with palettefitting red ties. Meanwhile, his bride looked stunning in her choice of Dillon from Wed2B. The couple enlisted the help of several entertainers to make sure their loved ones never faced a dull moment. Elinor Harp provided the ethereal ceremony and wedding breakfast music with a bespoke soundtrack loved by the newlyweds and guests alike. During the evening reception, Retrobooth was on hand to provide guests with photographic memories to take away, and to round off the night the Northern Wedding DJ kept the dance floor alight until the early hours of the morning. “Our wedding ceremony was the main highlight for us,” Kalvin shares. “This was thanks to the kindness, dedication and expertise of so many of our suppliers – including our venue, venue stylist, celebrant and harpist.” Kalvin is the man in the know, so we asked him for his top wedding planning tips: “Go to wedding fairs. We found so many of our suppliers this way. They’re fun and you can chat with suppliers face-to-face.” REAL WEDDINGS 25

A city-centre celebration Ashleigh and Josh celebrated their nuptials in the heart of Liverpool at The Clubhouse by Ropewalks Hotel Images courtesy of Keyhole Studios REAL WEDDINGS 31
When Ashleigh was supporting the launch of a friend’s new clothing store at Cavern Walks, she noticed a long-haired, 6ft 5in-tall man with a giant smile on his face, and they got chatting. Although they mingled and spoke to various other people, they seemed to keep coming back together. By the end of the night, Josh had asked if he could take Ashleigh out the following day. “I assumed it was just a drunken chat and gave him my number,” Ashleigh tells us. “So, I was shocked to receive a text the next day. We went to Blackpool, walked along the seafront and ate hot sugar doughnuts. After that, the rest is history – I couldn’t get rid of him!” Josh proposed four years later shortly after the birth of their daughter and they began looking for venues. Ashleigh knew she wanted their wedding to be in Liverpool city centre and when she came across The Club House by Ropewalks Hotel she instantly fell in love. “It was bright, airy and neutral with floor-to-ceiling windows. It just oozed citycentre chic with a touch of modern elegance,” she explains. “We booked it there and then with zero regrets.” The aesthetic was clean and accentuated the space rather than overcrowding it, using white with hints of champagne to mirror the bridesmaids’ dresses and Josh’s beige suit. Stationery was simple using a blend of white, black and champagne, alongside centrepieces of floating candles, candlesticks and white floral arrangements. The wedding breakfast began with a bruschetta starter followed by a main course of chicken with roast potatoes and spring greens. A sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce was served for dessert. “The plates were virtually licked clean,” Ashleigh remembers. “Everyone commented on how beautiful the food was.” 32
Ashleigh looked stunning in Wisconsin by Wona Concept. “Having gone shopping four months after giving birth, I was quite uncomfortable with myself,” she shares. “I’d tried on four dresses before, mostly ballgown silhouettes but nothing gave me the wow factor.” She’d seen her dress online, but hadn’t thought it would look good on her. Nevertheless, she asked to try it, and once she’d seen herself in it, she knew it was the one. Josh wore a beige three-piece suit by Sawyers and Hendricks, while his groomsmen were dressed in green versions. The bridesmaids complemented the groom’s party beautifully in champagne Bardot midi dresses. Singer and guitarist Neil Noa provided music for the drinks reception, wedding breakfast and cocktail hour, creating an atmosphere of celebration. “It was the perfect mix of chilled, upbeat and classic songs,” Ashleigh remembers. Later on, guests could try their hand at a fun casino, and Après Music provided the DJ, sax and bongos for the dance floor. Before we part, the bride has three top tips for those of you planning your big day: “1. Shop around. Don’t book the first things you see. 2. Make sure you’re creating a day for you and your future partner to enjoy, not the one you think everyone else expects. And 3. Don’t get bogged down by the small details. They honestly seem so big in the lead-up, but on the day you won’t care in the slightest.” REAL WEDDINGS 33

Styling an ornate, historical venue for a wedding can be a tricky business – here a team of local experts show us just how it’s done Images courtesy of Emma Beaumont Photography THE MAKING History in When Lauren from LMJ Weddings and Victoria, the videographer from Victoria Louise Weddings, got together to create a styled shoot, the aim was to make the most of the beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces at the historic Arley Hall and Gardens. Working with a team of talented local suppliers, each area was designed carefully to highlight the venue’s character throughout. The shoot combines romantic editorial styling with modern details and classic English-garden elegance. The focus was on celebrating the surrounding period features while adding soft contemporary touches through florals, fashion and tablescaping. Outside, the styling allows the gardens to shine with the florals designed to feel natural and organic, as though they belong in the landscape. Instead of a large, constructed backdrop, the focus was the Hall itself, demonstrating how thoughtful styling and placement can create impact without feeling excessive. Inside the gallery, the tablescape complements the historical interiors. A long banquet table was laid out beneath the ornate ceilings and chandeliers, creating an intimate dining setting within the grandeur of the wood-panelled room. Meanwhile, low, abundant floral arrangements allow candlelight and conversation to remain the focus. The overall palette flows seamlessly from the outdoors in with layered neutrals, soft blush florals and natural textures that complement the richness of the venue rather than competing with it. This shoot beautifully showcases how a historic venue can be transformed into a luxurious editorial wedding setting while celebrating its heritage, elegance and natural beauty. 36

The stats are startling when it comes to the environmental impact of a wedding in the UK. The average celebration produces a whopping 14.5 tonnes of CO₂; that’s more than the average person’s entire yearly emissions, roughly equivalent to driving a car around the world twice! It’s shocking stuff, but it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that being sustainable comes with a high price tag – if you don’t have an endless budget it’s not for you. In fact, it’s about a system of small, visible sustainable choices across every element of your day instead of one grand eco gesture, that makes the biggest difference. This can be achieved whatever your budget. We’ve broken it down for you. From casual DIY vibes to full luxury, simply decide what works for you and start making those changes to ensure you celebrate with a conscience. Check out our handy checklists to keep your impact in check. Simply choose one or more of the options that suit you from each category and – hey presto – you’ve created your dream day the sustainable way! unsplash.com/@joseayalafotografia Design a wedding where every element is reused, repurposed or returned to nature whatever your budget Weddingcsonwsciitehnce 40
If you’re working to a tight budget, this is where sustainability shines naturally, as low cost often equals low waste. DON’T BREAK THE BANK Effortlessly eco STATIONERY Digital invitations sent via email. Recycled or seed paper invitations that guests can plant. Set up a wedding website for your RSVPs and important information to save on printing. FOOD AND DRINK Source a local catering company to reduce your carbon footprint. Opt for a seasonal menu featuring locally sourced ingredients. Eliminate waste by asking your caterer about donating any leftovers, or plan guest takeaway boxes. VENUE STYLING Source flowers from a local flower farm or grower. Choose from in season blooms, that don’t need to be imported, eliminating air miles. Opt for wildflowers, dried flowers, or potted plants (which can double-up as favours). Hire props, don’t buy then throw away. Hit the charity shops for centrepiece elements such as vases, jars and candles. Remember: this only works if you re-donate them post-wedding. WASTE REDUCTION Set up clearly labeled recycling and compost stations. Completely avoid the use of single-use plastics – they’re banned! Skip traditional favours or gift edible versions such as homemade jam, local honey, choccies, biscuits or save the bees with seed packets. TAKE IT FURTHER Add a tree-planting ceremony if your venue allows, or look to offset by planting a tree with the Woodland Trust (shop. woodlandtrust.org.uk/wedding) unsplash.com/@farmsteadphoto unsplash.com/@moniqa unsplash.com/@walls_io ATTIRE Go preloved or vintage. Ask your bridesmaids and groomsmen to wear outfits they already own. Rent outfits instead of buying them new. SUSTAINABILITY 41
Here you can make sustainability feel more designed and intentional. MID-RANGE BUDGET Stylish, modern, relaxed elegance STATIONERY Work with your stationer to curate a minimalist recycled paper suite. Add QR codes for menus, schedules and RSVPs. Opt for one beautifully printed sign rather than multiple small ones. FOOD AND DRINK Look into caterers who thrive on farm-to-table catering options. Consider a plant-forward menu. This doesn’t have to be fully vegan, but you can reduce meat content. Source local wines and spirits to serve at your drinks reception and with the wedding breakfast. VENUE STYLING Plan strategically with your florist for floral installations that are reused across ceremony and reception. Always hire décor and props instead of buying. Utilise living plants that guests can take home or be planted in the garden of your together home. WASTE REDUCTION Style your recycling stations in keeping with your wedding theme, ensuring they actually get used. Avoid individual paper menus in favour of a single display board. Donate flowers to hospitals, care homes or as ‘thank yous’ after the big day. ONE STEP FURTHER Find out how to offset the carbon for travel with sites such as ecologi.com and wearezerocarbon.uk pexels.com/@thisisjooh rollinginroses.co.uk unsplash.com/@robertvasquez ATTIRE Research sustainability-focused UK designers. Take your sustainability practices to the next level with a seamless and premium feel. ULTIMATE LUXURY High-end, black tie editorial vibes STATIONERY Curate an ultra-minimal printing or digital-first luxury stationery suite. Print on high-quality recycled or FSC-certified paper. Look into elegant e-ink or digital displays for the venue, rather than printed. FOOD AND DRINK Ask your chef to devise a fully seasonal, hyper-local menu. Consider serving sustainable seafood and ethically sourced ingredients. Research suppliers who can offer you a zero-waste cocktail menu. For example, they might create their espresso Martinis using coffee-infused vodka with spent grounds from a nearby café. VENUE STYLING Source large-scale floral designs from florists who use foamfree techniques. Ensure your floral designers uses only locally grown blooms. Look at how your most showstopping installations can repurposed throughout the day. WASTE REDUCTION Enlist the help of a behind-thescenes waste management team. Ensure all of your suppliers are aligned with sustainability standards. ONE STEP FURTHER Fund a larger sustainability project such as a reforestation area or water initiative. Create an online impact report for your wedding website. Encourage group travel or shared transport by hiring minibuses for guests. Welcome gifts that are locally made and sustainable, or invite environmental charity donations in lieu of a gift list. unsplash.com/@karibjorn graceloveslace.co.uk pexels.com/@shvetsa ATTIRE Research fashion-forward designer outfits with sustainability credentials. Check out Grace Loves Lace (graceloveslace.co.uk) Focus on tailored pieces designed to be reworn. Shop vintage couture. You’ll have noticed a few themes here – ideas that work with any budget. Reduce before replacing as fewer items in general makes for the biggest impact. Think local sourcing as a good rule of thumb. Keep in multiuse design in mind - “What can I use for the ceremony and reception?” Communication should be digital first. And carefully consider your favours. If they’re not meaningful, scrap them. Stick to these ideas in general and you’ll be onto a winner! SUSTAINABILITY 43
