It’s official, the best time of the year is here, and I couldn’t be happier. Not only do we have the excitement of Christmas, but we also have the buzz of a new beginning. It’s this part of the year that most of us hibernate with a cheese- and chocolate-only diet, only to re-emerge on the 2nd of January, when we must drag ourselves back to reality and work. The festive time of year may be extra special for some couples too, as it’s the most popular time for partners to propose. If that’s you, then congratulations! Your mind may already be turning to wedding planning, but hit the brakes – this period is made for slowing down and family time. The wedding planning will still be there in the New Year when spring wedding show season kicks in – then the wedding fun really begins! That’s it for us this year; see you in 2026 with new wedding trends, lots of real wedding inspiration and articles to guide you through your wedding era. SUSTAINABLY SWEET Flower arches at weddings are increasingly popular, but how sustainable are they? What if you had a ceremonial arch that you could plant afterwards? Rosie from Rosedale Botanics has created handwoven willow frames that support up to 80 potted plants to create a sustainable, eye-catching display. The arches are bespoke, allowing you to choose the shape, size and plants used. Although breathtaking alone, you could also choose to add flowers. Rosie came up with the concept after seeing the devastating waste of cut flowers and plastic displays at weddings. With these beautiful arches, you and your guests can select your favourite plants at the end of the day to take home and plant as an everlasting keepsake. Head over to rosedalebotanics.co.uk for more information. NEWS Nearlywed Catch up on news in your local area jogreenfield.com LATEST NEWS 7

Boho chic Amie and Tom’s wedding at Ghyll Barn was boho themed with lots of colour Images courtesy of Lindy Rogers Photography REAL WEDDINGS 15
A mie and Tom’s paths crossed when Tom’s brother started dating (and eventually married) Amie’s best friend – talk about the ideal double date! Their relationship blossomed, and Tom got down on one knee and proposed to her at Keldas, with the beautiful views of Ullswater as their backdrop. Tom, with the help of their one-year-old, Louie, asked Amie to spend the rest of her life with him. Amie was caught completely off-guard; luckily, her stepdad wasn’t and was hiding out of sight to take pictures of the proposal. When it came to choosing their venue, they wanted something that was “beautiful, relaxed, and with outdoor options,” commented Amie. Ghyll Barn was perfect and would set the scene for their special day. To bring the venue to life, they chose a theme of wildflowers – wanting to harness a boho vibe that was relaxed and not overly formal. Tom and Amie enlisted the help of their mothers and family members to style the venue. Tom built the arch that they would later stand under, and they had the help of Amie’s cousin for the flowers on the special day. 16
Carrying on with the relaxed vibe, their food consisted of canapés, followed by a barbecue and finished with brownies and wedding cake made by Tom’s mother. Amie recalls, “At one point in the night, there was a queue for the brownies.” If that wasn’t enough, Amie’s bridesmaid also made a cheese board for the night! Amie wore a dress by Wilderly Bride, which happened to be the one that she had saved before her bridal consultation as inspiration. Amie explains, “It was the first dress she brought out, and I loved it straight away.” To keep up with Aime and her impressive dress, Tom wore a sage green tweed suit with a light-yellow tie, while the groomsmen opted for green versions. Two of Amie’s bridesmaids wore sage green dresses, and the third wore a blush pink to match with the pageboys. To see the celebration in with a bang, the couple entertained their guests with prosecco and a singer during the reception. One moment that stood out to them both was watching their son dance the night away surrounded by loved ones and their amazing band. REAL WEDDINGS 17

Rustic ROMANCE Long Acre Barn was turned into a wildflower, rustic escape for Olivia and Ryan’s wedding Images courtesy of Martin Price Photography REAL WEDDINGS 21
Olivia and Ryan met like many of us, online, and it was love at first swipe. When the time came to pop the question, it was Ryan that got down on one knee – choosing to ask Olivia on a rowboat in Knaresborough. For any couple, choosing a venue can feel like a mighty task; however, Olivia and Ryan had a clear vision in mind. Olivia comments: “We love spending long weekends exploring The Lakes, so we wanted our wedding to feel like the perfect getaway in the great outdoors.” Long Acre Barn set the scene for their nuptials and perfectly embodied the rural aesthetic they wanted. The chosen theme for their big day was rustic, chic pastels – perfectly displayed throughout their stationery and tablescapes. 22
Olivia and Ryan grew wildflowers and brought bright items from their home to decorate the space. This did wonders to enhance the already stunning venue and to make the wedding feel like a true representation of their personalities. For food, they opted for an Indian meal, in honour of Ryan’s culinary background – delicious! Being careful not to spill anything on her dress, Olivia wore a Teresa Atelier gown, recalling the moment she knew it was the one. “I had a gut feeling which made me notice the dress in the first instance,” says Olivia. Ryan and the groomsmen chose stone grey suits, highlighted by sage green ties, and the bridesmaids opted for sage green floral maxi dresses. To keep the guests entertained, Olivia and Ryan hired a guitarist, performed a tango for their guests and booked a DJ. One of their favourite parts of the day was celebrating surrounded by their friends and family. REAL WEDDINGS 23

STATIONERY 33 Here’s how to wow with your paper paraphernalia After the proposal, it’s not long after the cork’s been popped on the Champagne that thoughts quickly turn to wedding planning. Even though many couples say to themselves, ‘We’ll just enjoy being engaged for a bit,’ colour charts, themes and cake flavours very quickly become the topic of conversation. Of course, choosing a time, date and location are essential, but it’s who you will be sharing the day with which should be paramount. Whittling down your friends and family to your nearest and dearest is no mean feat, especially if your budget doesn’t allow for a huge guest list. There’s also the added pressure of who you think you should invite, rather than who you want to invite. Remember that no one’s opinion matters; if you don’t want Aunt Doris, then don’t invite her. If you don’t want your friend’s new boyfriend of two weeks there, you don’t have to – it’s about you and your partner, and that’s it! Once you have your guest list and have categorised it into day and night attendees, you can start thinking about your invites. This is an exciting, creative part of your wedding planning journey, and your choices are endless when it comes to conveying your big day to your guests and giving them a sneak peek of what’s to come. In our modern age, those looking for an eco-friendly option might consider a digital design which can be emailed or even WhatsApped to your contacts. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a sustainable option, most cards and papers can be recycled (you can even use recycled materials), or give your invites a dual purpose so guests can upcycle them after the big day, i.e., seeded paper that can be planted in the garden, creating a flower to remember your wedding. There are, of course, traditional elements of wedding invites, so do you want to follow the rules or throw the rule book out of the window? The wording on the invite, for the traditionalist, would be the titles and full names of the bride’s parents as the hosts, with a formal tone of inviting the attendee to the marriage of their child and their betrothed. Should you want to stick to this style, particularly if it fits the classically elegant theme of your wedding day, your chosen stationery designer will be able to assist you in the formalities. However, should you want a more relaxed affair, then the couples’ first names with wedding details would be more than ok – it’s your day after all! Essential details of which you can pick or choose include: • The hosts • The request to come to the wedding • The names of the couple • The date and time • The location • Reception information • Dress code • Separate RSVP card STATIONERY SUITES A stationery suite will enable a cohesive look across all your paper paraphernalia; what’s exciting, though, even if a little daunting, is the design you go for. You can be inspired by your chosen colour palette, your favourite hobbies, holiday destinations or TV shows you’ve watched together, i.e., think regal Bridgerton vibes. Getting creative with your invites will also help navigate the design details, theme and colour scheme for the rest of the day. STATIONERY Stylish
34 PAPER CHAINS When thinking about your stationery needs, it’s easy to consider the initial requirements of save-the-dates, invites and RSVPs; however, the design elements start from the very beginning right up until after the big day itself – don’t forget those thank you cards! Check list •Save-the-dates: Get these out early, even if you are still finalising the details. •Invites: Include as much information as you can so your guests know exactly what to expect. •RSVPs: These can be paper or digital. Make sure you give your guests a deadline. •Order of service and hymns sheet: More so for a religious wedding, but it’s still a nice touch for any wedding. •Table plan: There are some exciting ideas on Pinterest; you can go all-out with a plant pot display or keep it classic with an A-board on a fancy easel, to name but two of a hundred ways! •Table names: Many couples choose words relevant to their theme, such as movie characters, or places the couple love to visit together as a romantic go-to. •Guests’ place names: Calligraphy writing on a card is still sufficient; however, you can place it on a fancy stand, tie it to something sweet, or swap that card out for an agate coaster or Perspex plastic disc. •Menu: Food and drink can be listed either on the table or at each guest’s place setting; this is great for those with dietary requirements that may have ordered something else or for little ones attending the day. •Signage throughout venue: There are so many areas where you can continue the theme of the day through the stationery elements, such as welcome signs, take your seat instructions, signs in the lavatories flagging up toiletries, the cards and gifts area, and so on... •Thank you cards: The final goodbye to your wedding day, theme and colour scheme – make the most of this heartfelt thank you! STYLE Personalised: Consider Polaroid/photo booth pictures of the happy couple as your save-the-dates, followed by a picture of you holding a sign ‘we’re getting married’ for your invites, or a hand-drawn image of your chosen wedding venue followed by a hand-drawn image of you in your wedding attire for your ‘thank you’ cards. Classic: Think white with the emphasis on fonts, with a limited colour palette, and minimal embellishments. The ‘classic’ styles lend themselves well to stationery suites which are all perfectly packaged and sealed with a bow. Theme: Whether you have a floral paper, gold letters, and a wax seal on the envelopes for your Bridgerton-themed invites, or you go retro-disco with a bubble font, bold colour palette, and disco ball motif, themed invites are fun. Your stationery designer will love the creativity, and it will set the tone for the rest of the day so your guests will know exactly what to expect – they’re the ultimate sneak peek.
STATIONERY 35 CALLIGRAPHY AND FONTS With more than 200,000 fonts – yes, you read that right – you’re not expected to trawl through them all. Your chosen supplier will have a wealth of knowledge on the subject, and ultimately the style of font will be based on your chosen theme. For classic themes, consider italic designs with lots of curls and swirls and pretty capital letters, whereas modern invites would go for clean lines, bold prints, and readable spacing. Fonts can be fun and are as much a part of the design process as colours and prints. BESPOKE There are elements of your invites where you can go bespoke with the finishing touches; you can create your own stamp and wax seals, you can have a drawing of your wedding flowers, you can have a QR code to your own wedding website, or even a magnet or ‘scratch to reveal’ game on your save the dates – the options are endless. MENUS One thing to ask on your invites is whether guests have any dietary requirements, from gluten-free to allergies. It’s information that you really need to know for finalising your menus. Once you do that, stationery plays a big part here, from the menu designs placed at the guest’s dinner setting – or perhaps you’ll pop a central one on the table – to signage for the buffet, cake table and evening food trucks; continuing the theme is a must! Even something as simple as the menu: here’s where you can add a personal touch once again with subheadings such as ‘opening act’, ‘main event’ and ‘encore’ for your three-course meal. Why not add a sign at the bar showcasing your couples cocktails, Peter Colada and Mojit-Joe?
The Legal Bit It’s not all dress finding and cake tasting, understand the legal side of marriage so you’re not caught off guard One of the most fun parts of wedding planning for couples is making their special day entirely unique, and a reflection of their relationship. Celebrating this love is the central theme, but what many people can forget is that there are requirements to comply with to ensure the marriage is lawful within England and Wales. It may not be the most romantic thing to think about when you’re in the midst of preparing for one of the biggest days of your lives, but it’s really important to remember that if you want the benefits of being a married couple, your marriage does need to be legally sound. YOUR LEGAL CHECKLIST 1 The marriage must be voluntary and neither party must be forced to enter into it – it’s a criminal offence to force someone into marriage. The marriage must be monogamous. Bigamy (being married to more than one person at the same time), is a criminal offence in England and Wales and polygamy results in a voidable marriage. Although polygamy and open relationships are becoming increasingly common, it’s legally tricky to make these ‘official’ by way of marriage. 2The parties must be over 18 and must not be within the prohibited degrees of relationship i.e., direct ascendants and descendants, siblings or extended family members. 3Those entering into a marriage must give notice of their intent to marry at least 28 days before the ceremony. This involves making an appointment at their local registry office, preparing required documents such as ID and confirming their eligibility to marry (meaning that you’re over 16 with parental consent or 18 without) and not already married. 4Prior to the marriage is where parties may consider a pre-nuptial agreement. This is an agreement which sets on how assets, finances and debts are managed during the marriage and in the event of a breakdown of the marriage. This is not essential but can be a very useful document to have to provide clarity and avoid expensive disputes in the future. A post-nuptial agreement can also be drafted after the wedding ceremony which has the same effect. THE VENUE Choosing your venue is a lovely part of the wedding planning and is the start of where you begin to make your day truly yours. When choosing a venue for your wedding you need to ensure that it aligns with the legal requirements for a valid marriage ceremony. More people are choosing to not hold their ceremonies in traditional venues like churches but exploring other options. Many of these venues are licensed, and marriage ceremonies taking place there will mean you’re legally married. However, some are still unlicensed so your ceremony would not be legal, and you would need to arrange a legal wedding at your local registry office. This is often what is required if you have a wedding abroad, as your marriage may not be legally valid when you get home. If you get married abroad, you must ensure that you comply with the legal marriage requirements in the country in which you choose to marry. If you have, then your marriage should be legally valid in England and Wales. This means that if you later reside or have connections with England and Wales, you can issue divorce and financial remedy proceedings here in the event of the breakdown of the marriage. If your marriage is not considered legal “Choosing your venue is a lovely part of the wedding planning and is the start of where you begin to make your day truly yours. When choosing a venue for your wedding you need to ensure that it aligns with the legal requirements for a valid marriage ceremony.” 36
in England and Wales or you have not followed the correct procedure, then you will not be protected by the marriage laws. THE CEREMONY When planning your ceremony, you may well decide to include vows, whether traditional, religious or personal. Although, vows, and wedding rings are not legal requirements. What does need to happen after the ceremony is that both you and your new spouse need to sign the marriage certificate in the presence of two or more witnesses. Once you are legally married, you can request a copy of your marriage certificate, and this can be used for administrative purposes such as changing your name and validating your marriage status. You may have been pronounced as the newlyweds by an officiant, but if your marriage is not legally valid, and you live with your spouse, you will be classed as a cohabiting couple. Unfortunately, the law does not protect cohabiting couples in the same way it protects married couples. Assets, such as the family home, are not divided in the same way as they would be if the couple divorced. There is no automatic entitlement to financial, capital, spousal maintenance or pension claims. If you fear your marriage is not valid, you may wish to take steps to protect your assets such as preparing a cohabitation agreement or registering a declaration of trust with the Land Registry to protect your interest in any property you own. Robotic wedding speeches? With the rise of AI, we’ve lost the heart that goes into wedding speeches. Here’s how you can get it back As searches for ‘how to write a wedding speech’ peak every summer, many bridesmaids, best men, and proud parents are busy preparing their moment in the spotlight. But while it’s an honour to speak at a wedding, getting it right on the day, and pleasing a room of guests from different generations, can feel like a serious challenge. In fact, over half are using AI tools to help get their words out on the big day. Greetings card brand Thortful has teamed up with wedding planner, Gemma Logan, and humanist celebrant, Rachael Meyer, to reveal the most common speech mistakes, and how to make your words land with laughter, love, and lasting emotion to withstand the test of time. RELYING ON AI As the use of AI increases, it’s becoming easier to spot a botwritten speech, so don’t think that guests won’t realise. Users on Reddit are calling out speech givers, with one commenting, ‘Wedding speeches are personal and usually contain anecdotes relevant to the newlyweds. I don’t think AI would understand the relationship between you and the married couple to write you an emotion-laden speech. It doesn’t have to be polished, but authentic. And people can smell generic speeches from a mile away’. Another adds, ‘You were asked to give this speech for a reason, because of who you are to the couple. It’s okay to use whatever tools work for you to write it but make it your speech rather than someone else’s’. Rachael adds, “AI can be helpful for phrasing and structure, but just as a starting point if you’re stuck. AI lacks your personal experience, emotion, and knowledge. And with speeches, it’s all about the tiniest details.” TRYING TO BE TOO FORMAL Striking the perfect balance between fun and formality can be tricky, but Gemma says speeches that are too formal won’t land. “One of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to sound far more formal than they actually are. Wedding speeches are a chance to connect, not to recite a royal decree.” Chris Coultas comments on his wedding speech, explaining, “I was a bit too formal and I was desperately trying to thank everyone I could think of, but the list got longer and longer and people started to look bored…then I felt like I needed to mix it up with jokes, but I think the shift in tone just confused people.” “When people use overly flowery language or complicated words, it often comes across as stiff or insincere. Your guests are your friends and family, so speak to them as you would in a 38
relaxed conversation, just with a bit of polish,” explains Gemma. TOO MANY INSIDE JOKES Everyone loves a good laugh, but if your speech is packed with inside jokes only a handful of people will understand, you risk losing the majority of your audience. “Wedding speeches are for everyone at the table, so sprinkle in humour that all guests can enjoy. You can always save the really personal jokes for later on in private chats,” says Gemma. OVERLOADING YOUR SPEECH WITH STORIES In the same vein, making your speech too personal may lose the room if they can’t resonate with anything you’re saying. Gemma adds, “While it’s tempting to share every funny or memorable moment you have with your partner, a speech is not the place for your entire life story. Pick two or three standout stories that highlight your journey or the qualities you love most about your partner. Too many stories can make the speech drag and lose impact. Quality over quantity is the way to go.” NOT KNOWING YOUR ROLE AND YOUR CROWD “Before writing your speech, think about your relationship with the couple. Whether you’re a sibling, best friend or proud parent, your connection will shape the tone of your words. And don’t forget the audience! Weddings bring together people of all ages, so aim to make your speech inclusive, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone in the room,” adds Gemma. Chris shares his slip up, explaining, “I accidentally swore too, and most of the people there were very religious. The adults looked like they were trying hard to look disapproving, while everyone under 20 was trying to stifle a chuckle. I didn’t even realise I’d said anything bad until my wife commented immediately after I sat down.” TELL YOUR STORY, YOUR WAY AI can be great for formatting and organising your thoughts, but Thortful stresses that stories should come from the heart. “This is where your personal memories come to life. Think about moments that show the couple’s character or your bond with them, whether it’s touching, funny or revealing. I’d recommend using a structure with a beginning, middle and end so your story flows naturally.” INTRODUCE YOURSELF BRIEFLY AND WARMLY Don’t assume everyone knows who you are. An expert from Thortful recommends, “Set the scene with a short introduction about who you are and how you know the couple. It adds context and immediately personalises your speech. Keep it simple, as the goal is to help guests understand your place in the couple’s life.” OPEN WITH A HOOK You should grab the attention of guests immediately to get them hooked in, according to thortful. “The start of your speech matters. Use a thoughtful question, a funny anecdote, or a heartfelt observation to draw people in. A well-placed line like, ‘Has anyone not cried yet today?’ or ‘I knew they were meant to be when…’ sets the tone beautifully.” SHINE A LIGHT ON THEIR LOVE STORY Try not to make it too much about you and instead about the relationship you have with the couple. The Thortful team add, “Share your unique perspective on their relationship. Maybe it’s the first time you met their partner or the moment you realised they were perfect for each other. Make it heartfelt, honest, and true to who they are as a couple.” END WITH A HEARTFELT TOAST “No speech is complete without a toast. It’s always best to summarise your message, raise your glass, and invite everyone to join in a final cheer. Whether it’s traditional or playful, it’s your moment to celebrate love, laughter, and the future ahead.” MEET THE EXPERTS: Thortful, thortful.com | Rachael Meyer, rachaelmeyer.com WEDDING SPEECHES 39
