To have all my friends and family in one room felt so, so special. We could feel the love resonating around the room. My dad spent a load of money on my 21st birthday party because he never thought he’d have to pay for a wedding as he (like the rest of us) never imagined a time when gay marriage would be legal. To have him walk me down the aisle was really special for both of us. Siobhan was walked down the aisle by her best friend Ciara.” And a standout moment for the pair? “Hearing everybody cooing and laughing as our daughter went down the aisle first was a really magic moment,” adds Emma. “We’ve since watched it back on video and it’s so special. Niamh has Down’s syndrome so even though she was two-and-a-half she wasn’t yet walking, she went down the aisle on a pink trike and the best man had to be at the other end to coax her down!” Siobhan’s mum surprised guests by sharing Siobhan’s coming out story – which involved her disturbing her important viewing of an episode of Coronation Street! “She then surprised us again by bursting into song at the end of her speech!” laughs Emma. “The best man also shared a story about how I had texted him saying I was cooking for my lover and that she was steak-worthy!” The happy couple were thrilled when their friend Carl Austin-Behan offered to marry them. “He stepped in at the last-minute and, as a former lord mayor of Manchester, he had permission to conduct a wedding in Salford. He made it extra special and much more personal to us. And importantly he made it more gay and a celebration of queer love.” “Finally, a big thank you too to our friend Tally Bookbinder who’s a TV and film makeup artist – but did our hair and make-up as a wedding gift.” “Do what’s right for you. We wanted an urban, queer and relaxed wedding that was fun – so that’s what we did!” - Emma REAL WEDDINGS 27
