DRINK IT ALL IN Augill Castle in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, has launched a collection of hand-crafted dry gin. 1837 is a drink the embodies the essence of the castle with a feisty spirit that’s softened by the flavours of the surrounding land. The gin is designed to be drunk along with tonic from Marlish in Northumberland, but it’s just as easy to enjoy on ice as it’s softened with honey from local bees bursting with the oils and aromas of heather from the fells that surround the castle. The drink is called 1837 as that was the year that the plan to build the castle was created and when Queen Victoria ascended the throne, in short, a year in which history was made. The gin is produced in collaboration with Hawkridge Distillers in Berkshire and is released in a limited edition batch of 200 bottles. Each one will be numbered and signed by Augill Castle.
