I knew I wanted afternoon tea as the wedding breakfast, so the centrepieces featured mugs filled with artificial flowers. My dress was an end-of-line style but it was absolutely perfect and didn’t need any tailoring – it was so comfortable. I didn’t want to be bothered by a train, and being 5ft 10in it was a struggle to find a tea-length dress, so I went for an asymmetric hem. Because my hair is short I wouldn’t have been able to pin in a veil but I wanted to feel more special so I invested in a beautiful hair vine. Rachel wore an indigo Marc Darcy suit with a lilac bow tie. Given our wedding breakfast included cake and scones, we knew most of our guests wouldn’t be bothered about a big bake, so we opted for individual sponge cakes instead. We’d kept our vows a secret, and it turned out we were both using the exact same words. It showed how close we are and how completely in sync. The most important thing to us was that those in our wedding party felt comfortable. We weren’t really following the girls-weardresses thing, so we didn’t think it would be fair to force that on our nearest and dearest. 52
