Olivia Gibson reviews voco Winchester Hotel & Spa, for an unforgettable mini-moon getaway As a history lover, Winchester is naturally one of my favourite places to visit, brimming with historic charm and medieval architecture. There are countless must-visit spots, perfect for special occasions. That’s how I found myself at voco Winchester Hotel & Spa, an IHG Hotel, reviewing the property’s offerings for mini-moons. COUNTRYSIDE CHARM Situated just outside Winchester’s historic centre, off the M3, the hotel is perfectly positioned for a convenient yet secluded stay. Nestled on the edge of the South Downs National Park and only five minutes from the city centre, it offers a mixture of rural charm and city life. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the smart, polished façade and ample parking. Inside, the spacious, open-plan lobby blended contemporary style with cosy touches and plush furnishings. To enhance stays, guests can visit The ANA Spa, offering facials and massages across five treatment rooms. There’s also a gym and studio, plus a hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room for relaxation. YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME After a quick and friendly check-in, during which the team shared some great local tips, we made our way to the Premium King Room for a truly elevated stay. The modern retreat featured a calming blue colour palette, accented with contemporary touches. It felt spacious and welcoming, centred around a large king-sized bed dressed in luxurious bedding crafted from 100 per cent recycled materials. Cloud-like pillows made it easy to unwind, whether curling up after a day of exploring or catching up on favourite shows on the Smart TV. Tea and coffee facilities, including a Nespresso machine, alongside biscuits and a daily selection of replenished snacks added a homely touch. The bathroom was sleek and contemporary, with a walk-in rain shower, deep soaking tub, fluffy towels and luxury toiletries, making it easy to unwind after a busy day of adventure. DINING IN STYLE After a full day of exploring, we returned to the hotel to freshen up before heading to Kitchen 21, the hotel’s on-site restaurant. Nestled on the ground floor, the space offers modern British cuisine in a refined yet laid-back setting. I started with golden crispy calamari rings served with zesty lemon aioli and sweet chilli sauce, followed by the cornfed chicken breast. The tender, juicy chicken paired perfectly with sautéed new potatoes and fresh spinach, finished with a rich mushroom cream sauce – it was absolutely divine. We rounded off the meal with a selection of ice creams served in a crisp brandy snap basket. With warm, attentive service and beautifully presented dishes, it was a meal to remember! MEMORABLE MORNINGS Mornings were just as delightful, with hearty breakfasts offering everything from warm breads, pastries and cereals to cold meats and hot dishes. I enjoyed scrambled eggs, hash browns, tomatoes, mushrooms and sausages, washed down with fresh juice and a rich hot chocolate. Breakfast here felt like a celebration of great food and great company. A MINI-MOON TO REMEMBER We had the most magical stay at voco Winchester Hotel & Spa with exceptional service, meticulously maintained interiors, cosy bedrooms and fabulous food. We left with full hearts and lifted spirits, already planning our next visit!
