PRE-WEDDING DATE NIGHT Located in Hertfordshire, The Salisbury Arms Hotel has undergone a total refurbishment and revamp to add even more wow factor. After closing down for six months, the team have been working hard to completely transform the entire building while still maintaining many of its original features and character. They’ve opened two parts of the bar to add a better flow to the area, updated the restaurant for a more formal feel and added a stunning courtyard perfect for gathering in the summer months. The staff have kept the small Snug room at the front of the building for small gatherings and afternoon teas. The reception area has been completely opened up for a more welcoming and relaxed feel for guests when checking in. All the bedrooms were fully refurbished, with a minimum of a king-sized bed in each. There are two accessible rooms through the courtyard for guests who can’t quite manage the stairs. The signatures and some of the boutique rooms have beautiful free-standing baths – some even feature double showers. For something a little different, jump into an ethereal wonderland in the Japanese gardens and marry under the veranda of the tea house before crossing the bridge to discover secret spaces for photos. Continue the celebrations in The Great Hall with 120 seated guests and 200 in the evenings. The space provides a big fanfare with a beamed ceiling, stone-framed windows, a feature fire place, intricate wood carvings and a harlequin-tiled room at the back that opens out onto the gardens. Or opt for the Lakeside Pavilion with 130 guests for wedding breakfasts or 200 for evening celebrations. Its Japanese-style theme is tranquil, bright and breezy – it feels almost like a zen gateway with nothing but the sound of the fountain on the lake. The main Ware Priory building has lots of character and historical features, whereas Fletcher’s Lea offers a more contemporary feel. The riverside grounds provide the perfect backdrop to weddings and photography. Here couples will find river life of narrowboats, swans, geese and ducks. The back lawns are well kept and are a great location for drinks receptions and team-building games, while the wisteria archway offers a beautiful space for those iconic confetti pictures. Situated in what were the cloisters of the original Friary, the Priory Hall can accommodate ceremonies with 100 loved ones. With stained glass windows and a series of French windows that open onto the riverside gardens, the hall is the perfect destination for the “I dos” and receptions with 80 people. Alternatively, The Conservatory offers a bright and spacious interior with space to accommodate 100 people for the vows. The area was completely rebuilt during extensive renovations in the mid-1990s and is ideal for wedding breakfasts with 120 people or receptions with 140. The Hadsley Room, part of the Lady Suite, dates from the 15th-century and boasts a superb example of a crown post roof. The large refectory table used by the registrar to conduct ceremonies dates back to the 14th-century and is believed to be from the original Friary. The room is named after Robert Hadsley, who purchased the Priory in 1685, and his family owned the estate for the best part of 200 years. The location is now popular for intimate weddings with 40 guests for ceremonies and receptions. Or why not exchange vows in the Riverside Suite with 200 nearest and dearest? After creating many amazing memories together, it was time to take the next step in their relationship. Gregg proposed during a beautiful sunset on a beach in Cyprus, which was a complete surprise for Amy. She says, “I did nearly ruin it by unknowingly having the ring box in my hand wrapped in a pair of shorts at one point when we were packing!” Here Amy shares details about their special day… REAL WEDDINGS 29
Guests enjoyed brownies, cheese, a sweet cart and a wedding cake for dessert. I wore a Stella York dress, which I knew was the one as soon as I tried it – a veil and pearl jewellery finished my look. We legally had to get married at a registry office, but we held an outdoor blessing at the venue with guests sitting on hay bales. Our main aim was to throw a bloody good party! Loved ones could pick food from four different food vans, including pizza, hog roast, burgers and fried chicken. Tewin Country Weddings was a chilled-out venue that allowed us to create our dream day. It had a very festival feel, which matched our vision. 30
The rodeo bull and bungee run was a massive hit with loved ones. A saxophonist and DJ entertained guests in the evening. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in sage green dresses. We had an musician playing an acoustic guitar during the afternoon. The groomsmen and Gregg all wore blue suits with pink ties, pocket squares and rose buttonholes. REAL WEDDINGS 35 Matthew and Genna first met with friends while climbing Cader Idris mountain in Snowdonia National Park. The weather that day was terrible and many climbers were turning around to going back down the mountain, but both groups were determined to reach the top and decided to group up for safety reasons. Genna comments, “I hadn’t noticed Matt too much romantically until we had accomplished the mountain and was drying off in the tea rooms at the bottom. He gave out this amazing smile with dimples on each cheek. Matt became fond of me when I gave him some spare sandwiches on top of the mountain. It’s true; food is a way to a man’s heart.” The pair exchanged Instagram accounts and went their separate ways. Three months later, they met up for a date and the rest is history! Matthew planned a special easter egg hunt in the garden for Genna and their daughter, who was four months old at the time. He originally wanted to propose during a breakaway in the Cotswold, but that was cancelled due to the Covid lockdown. Genna recalls, “It was honestly adorable, so heartfelt and personal. Matt had put so much effort into writing cute place cards of our special moments and memories over the past few years – he even made his very own Cader Idris mountain with chocolate sheep around." Matt got done on one knee and was shaking with nerves, but it's a moment they will treasure forever. Here Genna shares details about their special day… SETTING THE SCENE Now living in Hertfordshire, the couple drove through Baldock quite a lot and Genna was always drawn to the beautiful St Mary's Parish Church. She says, “The spire and the entrance arch always caught my eye – everything about it was beautiful. I felt a sense of warmth and community in a church as I was brought up as a Christian in a Catholic education. I really wanted the ceremony to be special and traditional.” She adds, “Reverend Andrew was so friendly, we connected with him so well and he made our wedding day relaxed and joyful.” The ceremony was special from start to finish, and the pair tied the knot surrounded by loved ones. The bride’s grandma read a lovely blessing, which was so personal and tailored to the nearlyweds. While they signed the marriage register, a friend beautifully sang Can’t Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley to add to the romantic atmosphere. After exchanging vows, the church bells rang for all to hear and gave the bride goosebumps. Letchworth Golf Club was the perfect location for the reception, and the sun was sunning down on the newlyweds. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, the venue is a hidden gem with stunning views overlooking the golf course. The venue’s manager was so attentive and took the stress of wedding planning away to allow the pair to enjoy the experience fully. The bride says, “We loved the terrace that overlooked the beautiful grounds, especially as we could have the French doors open to allow the outside in. The food was delicious, and the presentation was spot on! We opted for a hot buffet to achieve a really relaxed atmosphere and allowed guests to sit anywhere.” The table centrepieces were kept simple, with candle holders wrapped in artificial eucalyptus for the perfect finishing touch. The photobooth and sweets area featured LOVE light-up letters to add the wow factor. LOOKING THE PART The bride looked stunning in a Pronovias dress called Alcycone, a mermaid style with a plunging V-neckline and stunning lace. The illusion straps and bodice left the bride feeling amazing. She accessorised her look with a cathedral-style veil with lace trim and
