Hello and welcome to the August/September issue of Your Herts & Beds Wedding. As we reach the latter part of summer and begin to see the first hints of autumn on the horizon, it’s a beautiful time of year for weddings. Late summer celebrations offer the best of both worlds – long, light-filled days and the possibility of warm evenings, alongside the richer colours and cosier atmosphere that come with the changing seasons. Whether you’re planning a sun-soaked celebration or looking ahead to an autumnal affair, there’s plenty in this issue to inspire you. This time, we’re heading to North Herts to discover some of the wonderful wedding venues the area has to offer. We’re also celebrating weddings that are unapologetically personal. Our gorgeous same-sex styled shoot is filled with relaxed boho charm, whimsical details and dreamy pastel shades, while one of our fabulous real weddings proves that inspiration can come from anywhere – including the prehistoric era! Of course, style plays its part too. This issue, we’re turning our attention to organza – a light, romantic fabric bringing beautiful movement and ethereal drama to modern bridalwear. I hope this issue encourages you to embrace the ideas, details and traditions that feel right for you. After all, the most memorable weddings are those that truly reflect the people at the heart of them. Happy planning! CAPTURE YOUR WEDDING DAY THROUGH THE EYES OF AN ARTIST Looking for an alternative to traditional wedding entertainment or a truly unique keepsake? Wedding sketch artist Matthew Slater offers couples a creative way to relive their celebration through a collection of beautifully observed illustrations. Rather than creating caricatures or guest portraits, Matthew works discreetly in the background throughout the day, capturing everything from the venue and ceremony to the cake, musicians, decorations and candid moments between family and friends. Each digital or pen-and-ink sketch takes around seven minutes to complete, resulting in a collection of around 40 to 50 illustrations that tell the story of the day. A few weeks later, couples receive a bespoke collection of artwork, presented as a photo book, sketchbook, framed collage and USB containing every image – a one-of-a-kind memento of their wedding. His distinctive approach has already proved popular with couples, with one recently commenting: “If anyone has any sense they’ll book you for their wedding! Best decision we made.” The testimonial accompanied one of Matthew’s Instagram posts, which attracted more than 5,000 views. Matthew is also introducing live sketching at selected wedding fairs and venue open days, where visitors can sit for a quick iPad sketch and take home a printed colour illustration. Upcoming appearances will be announced at www.matthewslater.art and via www.instagram.com/matthewslaterart SAY THANK YOU WITH A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE Looking for a thoughtful way to thank your bridesmaids or groomsmen? Experiences.co.uk has expanded its range of experience gifts, including a unique option right here in Hertfordshire. Couples can swap traditional keepsakes for lasting memories with a **one-night safari tent camping stay for up to five people in the beautiful Lee Valley**. Available at either the riverside Dobbs Weir glamping site or the more rustic Almost Wild campsite, the experience offers the chance to switch off, reconnect with nature and enjoy quality time together. Sleeping up to five guests, the spacious safari tents provide the perfect base for exploring the Lee Valley’s scenic trails and waterways before settling down beneath the canvas for a peaceful night’s sleep. The collection also includes spa days, evening cruises and creative experiences, giving couples plenty of inspiration for personalised thank-you gifts for their wedding party. Imran Malek, Corporate Sales Manager at Experiences. co.uk, says: “Bridesmaids and groomsmen play such an important role in the lead-up to a wedding and on the day itself, so it’s only fitting they receive a gift they’ll truly remember. Experiences create lasting memories and are a wonderful way to show your appreciation.” Find out more at www.experiences.co.uk 8

19 Shuttleworth offers exclusive-use celebrations in an award-winning historic setting Built adjacent to the site of Warden Abbey, a monastery founded at the time of the Domesday Book, stands the former home of the Shuttleworth family – a 4,500-acre estate in the heart of rural Bedfordshire. With its exquisite Grade II Listed Jacobean-style mansion and picturesque Regency-era Swiss Garden, it’s no surprise that Shuttleworth won Wedding Venue (Historic Building) of the Year at the East of England Wedding Industry Awards in 2025. Stepping into Shuttleworth House is like entering an Edwardian time capsule, thanks to its ornate period features and magnificent works of art. All couples marrying at Shuttleworth House enjoy exclusive use of the venue, meaning they can choose from an array of grand and unique rooms, adapting and tailoring the space to their wishes. Hosting wedding ceremonies for up to 240 guests and seated dinners for up to 150, couples can enjoy a collection of exquisite spaces perfectly suited to weddings and celebrations. Shuttleworth’s Swiss Garden features the fairytale-like Grotto and Fernery and the Swiss Cottage, perfect for a romantic outdoor affair. The garden is a rare survivor of a Regency garden in the ‘Swiss picturesque’ style. It was first opened to the public in 1982 and is often described as a hidden gem. The Swiss Cottage is suitable for ceremonies of up to 20 people indoors, with a further 50 standing on the lawn, while the Grotto and Fernery are licensed for up to 17. Both offer a romantic, intimate feel. Beyond the garden, the beautiful 425-acre Old Warden Park provides ample space for grand marquees and tipis. With rolling parkland vistas and steeped in compelling history, Shuttleworth can provide a piece of land for you to hire where you can build your own wedding structure, tailored to your individual requirements, for up to 2,000 guests. The range of stunning backdrops, combined with the dedication of the Shuttleworth wedding team, who ensure every wedding is carefully tailored to each love story, results in truly unforgettable celebrations. We asked wedding photographer Sarah Whyte of Purple Kite Photography what couples can do when they want to get a close family in a shot, but don’t like the formal set up? Many couples are moving away from traditional group photos where endless combinations of guests stand in rows. The key is to build a moment that feels natural, joyful and connected, then photograph the energy rather than the pose. As a documentary style photographer, I focus on capturing your wedding day unobtrusively. So will spend the day looking for little, unnoticed moments of authentic connection – that’s where the magic is! There are many natural opportunities to gather together throughout the typical wedding day where your photographer can capture natural interactions, rather than lining up for formal group photos. Moments such as the confetti shot, the post-ceremony hugs, during a favourite song or right before the cake cutting when everyone naturally gathers, result in a family photo full of movement, joy and closeness. Most couples still request a few organised group photos, but it’s often the moments around these, when the group are chatting or laughing as they get into position that produce the most natural and beautiful photos. Some of the best family shots happen: As people walk into position; When someone cracks a joke; When a child wriggles or runs away; When people adjust clothes or hair – when they’re reacting to each other, not the camera! Think about how you’d like to pose for your group photos. Rather than standing in a line, you can gather more naturally. Choose to sit together on a bench or low wall, gather around an arch or doorway, chat together in a loose semi-circle. Most importantly, discuss your goals with your photographer ahead of time, so you’re on the same page. A good documentary photographer will likely snap loads of amazing photos of you connecting with your closest friends and family without you even noticing, but having a conversation about what you want in advance ensures your photographer knows what is most important to you. A roarsome ROMANCE A chance meeting sparked a friendship that soon turned into love, leading Andy and Jolene to create the wedding of their dreams – complete with dinosaurs and all Andy and Jolene met aged 18 during a night out with mutual friends. Their connection started as a friendship, before six years later falling in love. The proposal came out of the blue on the couple’s 12th anniversary, with Andy popping the question in Bruges. SETTING THE SCENE The couple opted for a truly personal big day. Jolene says: “Choosing a venue where everything could take place in one location was important to us, and Milling Barn ticked every box. We fell in love with the beautiful wisteria draped across the old barn, the swing overlooking the horse field and the stunning grounds. Personal touches made the day uniquely ours, from hand-embroidered napkin favours, lovingly stitched by Andy’s mum Sue, to bespoke bunting created by our bridesmaids and their mum during my hen party. We embraced colour with vibrant British wildflowers, while playful gold dinosaur centrepieces reflected our personalities. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, we opted for a macaron tower – a fun alternative we knew our guests would enjoy.” LOOKING THE PART “I fell in love with my dress because of the embroidered flowers all over it,” says the bride, who chose her gown from About a Bride. The design was made even more personal when the detachable sleeves were reworked into elegant fitted sleeves, while leftover embroidery was transformed into a sash for the flower girl’s dress. She completed the look with trainers for comfort, a memorial necklace containing her mum’s ashes and earrings borrowed from her “illegal guardian”, Annabel. “I’m normally very casual, so it was a big shock to see myself so dressed up,” she laughs. Andy wore a green tweed three-piece suit with a Liberty print floral tie and pocket square, while his groomsmen wore matching brown tweed suits with green ties to complement the bridesmaids’ forest green dresses. The bridesmaids were free to choose their own dress style in the same fabric, ensuring everyone felt comfortable while creating a beautifully coordinated bridal party. MOMENTS TO TREASURE “We were so excited to see all of our planning come to fruition,” the couple say. “The vows were a little nervewracking because everyone was looking at us, but once the ceremony was over, it was wonderful to spend the day celebrating with all the people we love.” One of the biggest highlights was Andy’s hilarious groom’s speech, which guests are still talking about. There were plenty of memorable moments too, including the couple’s two-year-old flower girl enthusiastically enjoying a chocolate ice cream before changing out of her stained white dress into a dinosaur dress. The couple were also overwhelmed by the kindness of those around them. Following the bride’s mum’s passing, her closest friends delivered a heartfelt speech and walked her down the aisle alongside Andy’s dad. Their suppliers went above and beyond, from the Milling Barn team setting up all the decorations and moving them between the ceremony and reception spaces, to the florist gifting extra flowers, the make-up artist keeping the day running smoothly and the photographer remembering a special photograph the bride had mentioned in passing. “Everything was perfect, and we’re so grateful to everyone who made our day so special,” they say. LOVE AT fi sigh After meeting at the gym 12 years ago, Kim and Dan’s romance led to a beautiful proposal in Spain and an elegant autumn wedding surrounded by their nearest and dearest Images courtesy of Nikki Watkins 28

Twelve years after Kim first spotted Dan at the gym, a chance introduction by a mutual friend changed both of their lives. The pair quickly became inseparable and, following a romantic proposal during a weekend away in Spain, celebrated their love with an elegant wedding that reflected their relaxed personalities and brought together the people who mean the most to them. SETTING THE SCENE Keeping things intimate was always at the heart of Kim and Dan’s plans. They exchanged vows at Cheshunt Registry Office before celebrating with family and friends at The Tranquil Turtle in Stevenage, creating a relaxed, beach-inspired atmosphere rather than a traditional formal reception. A timeless palette of crisp white, soft neutrals and touches of pale blue – chosen to complement the outfits worn by Kim’s daughters and granddaughter – flowed throughout the day. Drawing on her years of experience in the wedding industry, Kim carefully selected trusted suppliers to bring her vision to life, from elegant florals by Ivory & Lace to personalised signage and stylish décor that perfectly reflected the couple’s vision. LOOKING THE PART Kim looked stunning in an elegant off-the-shoulder Veni Infantino gown by Ronald Joyce, found at Ivory & Lace in Toddington. “Sarah was incredible in helping me find the one,” says Kim. “Dan thought I’d choose something much more glamorous, but the dress I picked was elegant, timeless and so comfortable.” Dan wore a smart three-piece suit with an ivory waistcoat, while his groomsmen coordinated in matching suits with pale blue waistcoats. Kim’s eldest daughter, Alina, wore a beautiful pale blue gown from House of CB, while granddaughter Ivy and youngest daughter Nellie wore matching blue dresses, perfectly complementing the day’s colour palette. MOMENTS TO TREASURE Live singer Roxy created the perfect laid-back atmosphere during the drinks reception before magician Lee Smith amazed guests with close-up magic. Later, DJ Mabel Stokes kept the dancefloor full all evening. For Kim, the most memorable moments were being walked down the aisle by her brother, seeing Dan waiting at the end of the aisle, closely followed by the heartfelt speeches from her daughters and the surprise first dance organised by Adam. 30

This gorgeous boho shoot offers same-sex wedding inspiration aplenty, combining whimsical details and a fun, relaxed vibe with a dreamy palette of spring pastels Images courtesy of Brad Gommon Photographer BEAUTY The shoot was inspired by photographer Brad Gommon’s long-standing love for the fun, relaxed feel of boho-style weddings. Drawn to their effortless, free-spirited energy and the way they create a laid-back yet beautiful atmosphere, Brad wanted to bring this aesthetic to life through the shoot. With his first same-sex wedding coming up later this year, Brad also saw the shoot as a great opportunity to explore and practise capturing the dynamic between two brides. It was important to him to build confidence in telling that story authentically, while also creating something meaningful and visually inspiring. The shoot was equally about making connections and networking, bringing together like-minded creatives from across the wedding industry to share ideas and build relationships in a collaborative environment. The aim was also to create plenty of beautiful content for the team to use in their marketing materials, helping to showcase their talents and services. Brad approached the venue after it had recently completed work on its new Pavilion, making it the perfect time to create fresh imagery that reflected the updated space. The overall concept and colour palette were inspired by the brightness of spring, with soft yet vibrant tones complementing the relaxed boho aesthetic while adding a sense of energy and seasonality. Marriage, Money, Rosanne Godfrey-Lockwood, Family Barrister at 4PB explores Gen Z couples and the rise of prenups As a family barrister, I spend much of my professional life dealing with what happens when relationships break down,” shares Roseanne. “That vantage point inevitably shapes how I think about marriage — not cynically, but realistically. It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that one of the most notable trends I have observed in recent years is the growing interest in prenuptial agreements among Gen Z and younger Millennial couples. “Once regarded as the preserve of celebrities or the very wealthy, prenups are now firmly entering the mainstream. Far from signalling a lack of faith in marriage, this shift reflects a broader generational rethinking of what commitment looks like in a modern world — and, in many cases, a desire to approach marriage with clarity, transparency and mutual respect.” Here, Rosanne tells us more… WHY YOUNGER COUPLES ARE EMBRACING PRENUPS Younger generations are marrying later than their parents and grandparents did. By the time many couples reach the altar, they have already built careers, purchased property, launched businesses or accumulated savings — sometimes alongside student debt or other financial obligations. This means they are no longer starting from a blank slate. In my experience, Gen Z clients are far more comfortable having open conversations about money than previous generations. They have grown up against a backdrop of economic uncertainty, rising living costs and widespread awareness of divorce. Many have witnessed the financial and emotional consequences of relationship breakdowns within their own families. As a result, they are often keen to avoid ambiguity. For these couples, a prenuptial agreement is not about planning for failure; it is about understanding each other fully before marriage. It is a way of setting expectations at a calm, constructive moment — rather than leaving difficult questions to be resolved under pressure at a later date. MARRIAGE AS A DUAL PARTNERSHIP We are seeing a move away from viewing marriage solely through a romantic lens. Younger couples are increasingly viewing the union as a dual-faceted partnership: one that is deeply emotional, yes, but also undeniably financial. In previous generations, marriage often marked the beginning of financial life. Couples started with nothing and built everything together. Today, the timeline has shifted. Younger couples are marrying later, often in their late 20s or early 30s. By the time they reach the altar, they have already established independent financial identities. Couples are understandably eager to protect those identities which they have worked hard to create. and ModernLove “ 38

PRENUPS AS PRACTICAL, PROACTIVE TOOLS When drafted properly, a prenuptial agreement is a flexible and thoughtful document. It can protect assets acquired before the marriage, clarify how future wealth is treated, and set out how financial responsibilities are shared. Importantly, it can also address debt — an issue of particular relevance to younger generations. Crucially, modern prenups are increasingly collaborative rather than adversarial. They encourage full financial disclosure and open dialogue, helping both partners understand where the other is coming from. In that sense, they often function as much as a relationship exercise as a legal one. I often explain to clients that a prenup is akin to an insurance policy or a will: something you hope never to rely upon, but are glad to have in place. It does not predict divorce any more than life insurance predicts tragedy. It simply acknowledges that life is unpredictable. A NEW WAY OF BUILDING WEALTH Another important factor driving this shift is the way younger couples build and manage wealth. Many no longer rely on a single, linear career path. Instead, they may juggle multiple income streams, entrepreneurial ventures or investment portfolios alongside traditional employment. By the time they marry, both partners may have distinct financial identities — and rightly wish to retain a degree of independence within the relationship. Prenuptial agreements can help strike that balance, recognising individual contributions while still committing to a shared future. The nature of wealth itself has changed, and this is perhaps the greatest driver of the “Gen Z Prenup.” Younger professionals are building wealth differently. They aren’t just bringing a savings account and a car to the marriage; they are bringing diverse and complex asset portfolios. In my area of expertise, we often see young couples with: • Established careers: High-earning individuals who have spent a decade climbing the corporate ladder. • Entrepreneurial ventures: Gen Z is the most entrepreneurial generation yet. Many enter marriage owning or part-owning s tart-ups, digital businesses, or scale-ups with significant future growth potential. • Multiple income streams: From side hustles and freelance portfolios to digital assets and cryptocurrency, the modern balance sheet is more «fragmented» than it used to be. • The bank of mum and dad: With the UK housing market as it is, many young couples receive help from parents to secure a first home. A prenup is often a condition of that gift, ensuring that family inheritance or deposits remain protected for future generations. From my perspective, this reflects maturity rather than selfinterest. It allows couples to enter marriage as equals, each bringing something of value to the partnership, rather than assuming an automatic merging of everything without discussion. A SIGN OF CONFIDENCE IN MARRIAGE, NOT DOUBT Perhaps the most important point to make is this: the rise of prenups among Gen Z does not mean younger generations believe less in marriage. They simply understand the financial reality and consequences associated with it. Perhaps the internet, and more specifically, AI has just made it easier to understand those consequences.
