Daisy and Alex met when they were introduced by a friend. “We arranged to meet for lunch,” Daisy tells us. “We both lived a few hours apart but regularly made time to spend with each other and the rest is history!” The couple became engaged during a holiday in Canada. “Alex asked me to marry him at the top of Sulphur Mountain as we exited the gondola,” Daisy says. “It was a beautiful day and a wonderful surprise.” SETTING THE SCENE The couple viewed a few barn wedding venues before walking into Cripps Barn. “We both instantly knew that we wanted to get married there,” Daisy tells us. “We adored the rustic-inspired, romantic setting and the open fireplace was perfect for our winter wedding,” Daisy explains. “We were inviting 60 guests in total so the barn provided an ideal intimate setting.” Daisy and Alex chose a personalised wooden board as their table plan. “It featured a watercolour stag design with burgundy touches that matched our invitations and welcome board,” Daisy tells us. “My uncle made the table numbers using horseshoes placed in the centre of each table on oak slabs and my father has a collection of restored post boxes and lent us one to use as a wedding post box which he drilled on to a wooden board and positioned on the side next to our guestbook.” The couple gave each guest a personalised wooden coaster with their name on it, which doubled up as their place setting and favour and provided a wonderful keepsake. Daisy and Alex’s choice of flowers included white blooms with a hint of pink mixed with plenty of foliage. “Our bouquets and buttonholes looked perfect,” Daisy tells us. “Our florist collected the arrangements the following day and we loved being able to hand bunches out to our loved ones and keep some ourselves. Our buttercream cake was also decorated with fresh flowers along with a personalised wooden cake topper.” “We didn’t have space in our budget for an official wedding car so we asked my stepfather and our best man if we could use their vehicles to transport us - it was a laugh for the gents to decorate their vehicles with bows and ribbons!” – Daisy REAL WEDDINGS 23

The couple chose the British feast menu for their wedding breakfast. “It created a relaxed, social atmosphere with everyone helping themselves from large platters of food,” Daisy says. “Because our families are from different parts of the country, it got everybody talking which was lovely to watch. For the main course, we chose roast lamb with all the trimmings which was the best lamb we’ve ever had, and many of our guests said the same! Everything from the canapés to the pork baps served in the evening tasted delicious.” LOOKING THE PART Daisy wore a plain satin A-line gown featuring a pearl and diamanté belt that she teamed with a faux-fur cape and a satin-lined veil. “The shape of my dress was very flattering and I finished my look with some subtle diamond jewellery.” Alex wore a grey morning suit, the same as the groomsmen, but teamed his with an ivory waistcoat while the others wore grey waistcoats. “The men wore matching pocket watches and cufflinks along with buttonholes made with pink roses and foliage plus burgundy ties and pocket squares to match the burgundy bridesmaids’ dresses,” Daisy tells us. “Our bridesmaids also wore fluffy cardigans with their full-length dresses that looked stunning.” TIME TO ENTERTAIN The couple hired a string quartet who performed a selection of classic tracks and modern covers. “Our guests said it was great having musicians to watch rather than just listen to as they arrived at our ceremony,” Daisy tells us. “After the wedding breakfast, we booked a live band called The Sweet & Lowdown who played for three hours during the evening and sounded fantastic. They performed a good mix of party hits and 80s songs, which is our favourite kind of music, and our guests loved it, everyone joined the dancefloor at least once! After they finished at 11 pm, we had a party playlist pre-made for those still dancing! We’re fans of the rock band called Elbow and have always loved their song Mirrorball so we asked The Sweet & Lowdown to play a version because it held so many memories for us, and for the first few minutes we slow danced together in front of everyone. We had asked our best man, Adam, to get people dancing during the instrumental halfway through the song, which he timed perfectly, and for the last few minutes of the performance, the entire barn was filled with all of our nearest and dearest dancing in pairs or small groups which was magical to see, and a part of the day that neither of us will forget. A friend was recording it on his camera and we’re so glad we have that to keep forever.” REAL WEDDINGS 25

Summer love Wiltshire wedding venue Bowood was the stunning backdrop for this blush-pink and grey-themed wedding Images courtesy of Lauren Mitchell Photography Alex and Nick met on a train when they were both headed out for the evening. “We were sat near one another and Nick started a conversation,” Alex tells us. “I had a boyfriend at the time so I wasn’t very talkative but he added me as a friend on Facebook (which I ignored for five months) and we started messaging each other on my birthday after I became single. We met up for our first date and the rest is history! Nick says that it was love at first sight for him but for me, it was his perseverance because he had to put in some serious effort to win me over!” The couple became engaged during a trip to Kenya. “My mum lives there so I had flown over to see her for the Easter holidays without Nick who was busy with work commitments,” Alex tells us. “I enjoyed a wonderful week with mum going on safari and relaxing on the beach. On Good Friday, I was asleep on a sun lounger and woke up to somebody tapping me on the shoulder which turned out to be Nick! He told me that he had travelled there to ask me something, at which point the penny dropped. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him with a beautiful diamond solitaire ring that had been made using my late grandmother’s engagement ring. I heard clapping behind me as I said ‘yes’ which was my mum – she had been watching the entire proposal and was in on the surprise! Nick had also taken my dad out for dinner two weeks earlier to ask for his permission – he had thought of everything!” Here, Alex tells us all about their blush-pink and grey-themed day at Bowood in Calne, Wiltshire. Alexandra Louise Thompson (known as Alex) married Nicholas Roy Young (known as Nick) on 7th August 2021 at St John the Baptist Church, Colerne followed by a reception at Bowood in Calne, Wiltshire. Our guests blew bubbles as we exited the church as well as threw confetti! We used two different florists for our wedding flowers. The one from the village where the church is located often provides the arrangements for weddings held there and created us some wonderful displays for the entrance, pulpit, altar, windows, pillars and pews using soft-pink blooms mixed with traditional white flowers and plenty of foliage. After the ceremony, we left them for a celebration of life service that was being held on the same day for a friend of my grandparents, and the arrangements from the pews were placed on my grandparent’s grave. My bridal car was a family vintage Sunbeam tha t my mum’s cousin drove my dad and me in. Our bridesmaids followe d in a beautiful old white taxi while my mum travelled in a Rolls-Ro yce. When we visited various wedding venues near Col erne, Bowood stood out immediately. The Golden Gates as you enter provi de the wow factor plus it had The Kerry Suite that was large enough for everyon e to be gathered together in with a dancefloor and private bar just for our guests. We didn’t want lots of different rooms because we wanted to keep everyone together . I always knew that I wanted to get married at Th e Parish Church of St John the Baptist Colerne because my mum’s parents lived i n the village when I was a child and I have so many happy memories of visiting th ere. Both of my grandparents are buried in the graveyard and the church is just beau tiful. 30

The table names were some of the most special things that we had on the day. We were lucky enough to have a guest from Kenya (who was unable to make it to the wedding due to travel restrictions) commission a local Kenyan artist to create beautiful pictures of different African animals. On the back of each picture was the name of the animal in English and Swahili. Our place names featured hand-written calligraphy and matched our other stationery. Our table plan was made using a large freestanding mirror which looked fantastic! Our other florist frequently creates wedding flowers for celebrations taking place at Bowood and made the table arrangements, cake garland, door displays, bouquets, buttonholes and corsages. We chose succulents for the bridesmaids’ bouquets and freesias for my bouquet which are my favourite flower, I love the smell of them. On our top table, we had a long, low foliage arrangement and displayed some of the bridesmaid bouquets in vases to add some colour. On the guest tables, we displayed rustic log slices t opped with small jars of gypsophila and floating candles as centrepieces. Each table ha d a pink or grey theme and a matching rose of this colour was seen in each of t he centrepieces. “Our photographer, Lauren, was so organised and took amazing pictures – we loved our couple portraits taken outside.” – Alex and Nick Our guests blew bubbles and threw confetti as we exited the church! Nick wore a dark-grey tailcoat suit teamed with a dove-grey Oxford waistcoat, a floral pink tie and a pocket square to match our theme. He also had a bespoke shirt made for the day and I gifted him a Rolex watch as a wedding present. My dress was an off-the-shoulder ballgown by Essence of Australia. I had a sparkly belt added and wore a Cathedral-length veil trimmed with sequins. I had always wanted to feel like a princess for the day and I fell in love with this dress the moment I tried it on. We had chair sashes, coloured table runners and matching napkins. The room where our reception was held featured d raping on the wall and ceiling that was decorated with fairylights. We ha d blush-pink mood lighting, a starlit dancefloor and a starlit backdrop for the b and, pavilion drapes for outside and large floral LOVE letters placed next to the dance floor. My mum had pink and grey kikoi bags made in K enya that we used for our favours filled with homemade fudge. We also h ad heart-shaped paper fans for guests to use, a basket of flip flops by the dancefloor, blankets to be used outside as the evening drew in and mini clipboards with personalised activity packs and colouring pencils to entertain the children. Our mouth-watering wedding cake had a large ch ocolate and salted caramel layer with a raspberry and wh ite chocolate tier, a vanilla-flavoured tier iced with fre sh berry buttercream and a traditional fruit cake as t he top tier. We cut the cake with my grandpa’s ceremonial sword (he was in the Royal Engineers) which is what my grandparents and my parents all did at their wedding. Our guests enjoyed canapés and drinks on arrival, three-course wedding breakfast and pizza, chips and salad during the evening. We also had a cheese board, a sweetie table and a doughnut wall. “We were delighted that, after postponing our date by a year due to the pandemic, we had the wedding of our dreams, surrounded by all of our loved ones and with minimal restrictions.” – Alex and Nick 32

We also had a magic mirror photo booth, a pyrotechnic fireworks display to music and sparklers. During the wedding breakfast, a live harpist played in the background which sounded so romantic. We had a live band perform during the evening reception who were incredible! We entertained our guests with two casino tables (roulette and blackjack) which were played using f un money and the winners received prizes. Because we couldn’t travel abroad for our honeymoon due to the restrictions in place at the time, we spent an extra night in the bridal suite at Bowood which was great because i t gave us time to say goodbye to all of our guests and spend some quality time just the two of us. The groomsmen wore the same as Nick but with regular dove-grey waistcoats and buttonholes finis hed with twine to match the bridesmaids’ bouquets, while Nick’s was tied with grey silk to match my bouqu et. I wore a pair of sparkly bridal sandals, a beaded hair comb, a crystal bracelet, a pendant necklace and a pair of beautiful diamond earrings that Nick gave to me as a wedding present. For our ceremony, we had a violinist play as our guests arrived and during the bridal party entrance, signing of the register and our exit as newlyweds which sounded beautiful. She came to the reception with us and played during the drinks reception.
