STEP 5: LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! We touched on earlier about making the most of the location with romantic lighting, like fairylights, but we cannot stress this enough. The sun will eventually go down and you don’t want to be scrambling around in the dark. Not only will lights help to highlight the party areas but will help your photographer when it comes to capturing those all-important photos. A sunset picture with a gorgeous backdrop is going to be one you want in your wedding album. STEP 3: HAVE A CONTINGENCY PLAN Of course, at the forefront of your mind when planning an outdoor wedding is ‘what if it rains?’. A very understandable fear and one we all consider. However, the only way to combat this is to prepare for the worst, so you don’t need to make last-minute pleas for help. If the weather turns out to be a scorcher, then you need to have shade, bottled water and hand fans available for you and your guests. If the weather takes a British summer turn, then have some heaters, umbrellas and wellies ready to deploy. Ideally, the outdoor venue will have an inside option for those expected rainy days, but if not, you have taken steps to provide cover for your guests. STEP 4: KEEP MOBILITY IN MIND It’s very easy to be swept up in the romance of an outdoor wedding, but you need to keep mobility in mind. You may have elderly guests who need extra assistance getting to and from the venue, and you may also need to consider wheelchair users (or anyone else with extra mobility needs). I’m sure, if they are on your guest list, then you know them intimately enough to understand their needs. Discuss with the venue owner about any extra supports you can put into the venue or boards to level out uneven ground. Additionally, ensure that there is appropriate parking that’s safe for guests and other road users. www.jnlane.com 52
