Christmas is nearly here and we couldn’t be more excited! Like everyone, we’re hoping everything stays on track so that we can all enjoy plenty of the customary festive cheer with family and friends that we’re used to. One thing the last 18 months has hopefully taught us is to not take things for granted, so I for one am determined not to sweat the small stuff, embrace the moment and, if I can’t get hold of my favourite brand of chutney, no worries – time to try something new! Although we don’t like to count our chickens (or should I say turkeys) before they hatch, since restrictions eased, the floodgates have opened and 2022 looks set to be one of the busiest years for weddings in decades! With the Christmas and New Year proposal season about to add to the surge, we’re looking forward to bringing you lots of lovely local weddings to inspire and excite you in the months ahead. The ripple effects of the pandemic will be felt for some time to come and will continue to influence wedding trends moving forward. Demand for weekday, outdoor and intimate weddings is likely to continue, along with greener more sustainable options for the big day. Many of the important things about getting married have been brought into sharper focus too, like the vows and individual, special details to add that extra personal touch. Couples are looking closer to home for their suppliers bringing extra provenance and local flavour to their celebration and with a wealth of talent in the region, there’s plenty to choose from. This issue, from page 79 we look at what’s likely to be topping the menu for weddings in the year ahead. Don’t miss the winter wedding shoot on page 49 either for a host of styling ideas from a team of inspirational local wedding experts. Packed with all the usual bridal fashion, beauty tips, honeymoons and more, we can’t wait to hear all about your wonderful weddings! Don’t forget to get in touch after your big day for the chance to share the joy with our readers. FOREVER GREEN Sustainability is a major concern around the globe, influencing people’s choices in all walks of life, including their weddings. Newlyweds-to-be are increasingly looking to lower the carbon footprint of their big day by incorporating reusable and recyclable, locally sourced and planet-friendly products. High on green credentials doesn’t have to mean low on style though – far from it and Norfolk-based Posh Plants is testament to that. Specialists in living trees, topiary and plants to decorate wedding venues of all kinds, you can hire anything from statuesque bay trees to cool olive trees and more. Bring the outdoors in and create a wow-factor backdrop that’s eco-friendly and stunning too. Owner Sue Huckle says, “Posh Plant’s trees are around 30 to 40 years old (probably older than many of the brides!) and after going out to work at a wedding they come back home to the nursery, where they’re mollycoddled and looked after by me. So, nothing is thrown away or wasted, they absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, what’s more green is a really cool colour for weddings: timeless, elegant and sophisticated!” To find out more visit www.poshplants.com Your East Anglian Wedding has teamed up with Posh Plants to run an exclusive reader offer of 10% off the hire cost of any of their trees or plants booked during December 2021 and January 2022, simply by quoting the magazine on enquiry. Party on When Bethany and Sam finally managed to tie the knot they were determined to celebrate in style Images courtesy of Sam Gee Photography A matchmaking friend helped bring Bethany and Sam together. “During a girls night in with Kelly, I told her that I’d love to start dating again after being single for about three years. She mentioned Sam and I messaged him there and then, even though it was 2am! He’d just got home from working offshore and was heading off to Ibiza at the time,” reveals Bethany. She didn’t think anything more about it until up popped a friend request a few days later. “We started chatting and that was that,” she adds. Sam proposed in December 2018 following a lightbulb moment while working away from home for 11 weeks. “One day it just suddenly hit me that I wanted to propose. I always knew that Bethany was the one, but I’d never thought about marriage until that moment,” he recalls. With six weeks left before returning home, he set to work on organising how and where to pop the question. He had the whole moment mapped out in his head and was planning to do it during a trip to Iceland in December, on a romantic tour by private jeep to see the Northern Lights. A storm put pay to that though as the tour was cancelled so he ended up asking her in bed, during an ad break while watching Killer Women with Piers Morgan! Read on for Bethany’s account of their big day… REAL WEDDINGS 29

Sam looked smart in a green tux and the groomsmen wore brown tweed three-piece suits with green pocket squares and ties. I loved my Lunella by Willowby at Watter s dress, it was absolutely stunning. Sam, his dad, best man and my son arrived in style in a headturning red Hummer limousine. We chose the Parkhill Hotel because it was close to home and it’s a lovely intimate venue with beautiful grounds and a barn so we could still have the rustic feel we wanted. Our sausage dog Cecil had his own doggie bow tie to go with Sam’s. 30

Sean the magician entertained everyone during the welcome drinks and was a big hit. We had massive pampas grass stems in tall glass vases for the centrepieces. Our bouquets were tied with beautiful green velvet ribbon from Little Acorn Silks, which I also used around the middle of my two younger bridesmaids’ dresses to pull the whole look together. “Charlotte was amazing – not only my florist, but my wedding planner, my stylist, my everything!” REAL WEDDINGS 31

We wanted and needed a party so we had one in our garden. Sam organised it all, he gutted the garage, we had fairylights and Charlotte brought all our flowers back from the venue – the garden looked incredible. We drank, danced and were merry and after the DJ we had a silent disco, which was the funniest thing to watch. Our two-tiered naked cake was decorated with flowers and a beautiful custom-made topper from my mum. “We didn’t stop smiling all day. It was just the most lovely, happiest, best day of our lives. Especially after Covid and being separated from everyone we love for so long.” – Bethany We wanted a laid-back, sociable vibe during the wedding breakfast and the catering fitted the bill perfectly – the food was amazing! loving Summer Ellie and James’ big day was a chilled, fun celebration Images courtesy of Ella Nurse Photography 34

Growing up in the same town, Ellie and James already knew of each other but it wasn’t until Ellie posted a Game of Thrones photo up online that they actually started talking and the spark was lit. “As we were chatting we realised we had both moved back to Norfolk after being away at university so we went for a drink that night and got on so well it just went from there,” Ellie reveals. POPPING THE QUESTION James proposed to Ellie in New York on New Years Day. She’d taken him there to celebrate his 30th birthday on the 2nd January and he slipped the proposal in first. “It was amazing but very sneaky because he’d managed to keep it from me and had even asked my father’s permission on Christmas Day. He popped the question in front of the huge Christmas tree outside the Rockefeller Centre. He couldn’t have picked a better spot, it was beautiful and I had absolutely no idea it was going to happen.” THE TIME AND THE PLACE They set the wedding date for 21st August 2021 at The Georgian Townhouse in Norwich. Ellie says, “We’d seen photos of a wedding at the venue and we really liked the look of the place. Once we went there in person and tried the food, we knew it was the one and we booked it instantly.” LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding her dream dress Ellie ended up falling for the unexpected, a beautiful Maggie Sottero princess gown, which she wore with a veil and bejewelled heels. “It was actually one that Vicki from Pure Brides suggested and it was the complete opposite of what I thought I wanted but somehow, she just knew. As soon as I tried it on I also realised it was the one and I particularly loved the antique ivory colour which really suited me. Vicki made me feel so relaxed that I was able to enjoy the whole experience!” The groom and all his party wore matching blue suits with pink ties and pocket squares to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses. The buttonholes were mini versions of the bouquets and their two Siberian huskies looked the part in their own wedding finery. “Ghost, our male dog, wore the same style suit jacket as the groom and groomsmen, which was cleverly adapted by James’ mum, while our female husky Inca had a dress made from ivory tulle.” THE ‘I DOS’ Although the nerves kicked in a little on the wedding morning James barely had time to notice as he had his hands full with the dogs and overseeing proceedings in the main building, while Ellie was looking after their baby boy Atlas. “I was in the separate apartments and although I was very nervous, I was excited too. The ceremony was beautiful and it meant the world to us having everyone there as we had to rearrange our original date due to the pandemic and it was such a relief for it to be going ahead.” Ellie adds, “We had live music, which was really important to us to set the tone of the day and when I heard Simon singing it actually made me relax before walking up the aisle,” recalls Ellie. THE PERSONAL TOUCHES The wedding flowers included O’Hara roses, pampas grass and bunny tails, trailing pink ribbons and a blend of nude, pink and pale peachy tones with dried eucalyptus to add extra depth of colour. James’ mum made tissue paper roses to scatter on the tables, all hand-dyed to reflect the colour scheme. As James is an artist, he did all the signage to tie everything in with the big-day theme. He also designed the table names, all places in New York that they’d visited with ‘Top of the Rock’ for the head table in a nod to their engagement. They also made the place names themselves using wax seals and a matching font. “We went for scratchcards in personalised envelopes as favours because we loved the idea of someone possibly winning and we wanted something people could talk about and have a bit REAL WEDDINGS 35

of fun with at the tables,” explains Ellie. Their showstopping, hexagonal cake featured a hand-painted marble effect and gold detail, with a delicious chocolate layer, white chocolate and raspberry, topped with a vegan, lemon tier. Ellie raves, “Emma our cakemaker really stood out to us with her incredible detailing. She even included a little hand-drawn image of the cake on an easel next to it.” As big foodie fans the catering was another important highlight of the day. Ellie says, “We had a choice of food for the wedding breakfast so there was something for everyone to enjoy and the venue supplied fish and chips in the evening which were delicious and really added to the laidback, fun feeling we wanted.” TIME TO CELEBRATE The nearby Plantation Garden was a focal point of the wedding, providing a wealth of picture-perfect backdrops. “We took everyone over there as it was absolutely stunning and we managed to get a group shot of us all together and then our guests were able to go off and explore while we had our couple photos done,” explains Ellie. There were garden games and pick and mix sweets and an instant camera with the guest book for family and friends to capture the fun and leave a lasting memory of the day. Later in the evening they had sparklers outside and everyone hit the dancefloor to party the night away. REAL WEDDINGS 37

A AFFAIR family Susan and David’s blended wedding was a romantic waterside celebration Images courtesy of Dan Sunderland Photography Susan and David met in Cambridge and had their first date at The Bull Inn at Barton Mills. She fell for his gentlemanly ways and sense of humour and the rest, as they say, is history. He proposed with a gorgeous ring on Christmas morning 2019 before anyone else was up. “It was a beautiful surprise,” recalls Susan. “He had hidden the box under the bed and, not thinking that it was an engagement ring, when I put it on and he told me it was on the wrong finger, I suddenly realised what was happening.” She said ‘yes’, of course, and they tied the knot on 28th August, 2021 at The Boathouse overlooking Ormesby Broad in Norfolk. Set by the water’s edge, it provided the perfect romantic backdrop for their blended family wedding. Read on for Susan’s account of their big day… REAL WEDDINGS 41

The Boathouse was the perfect choice for us as it’s in a beautiful natural setting by the Ormesby Broad. We’d eaten there before, so we knew the food and service were good and the lovely garden was another attraction. As a blended family of seven, this was the theme for our wedding and the decorations and personal touches, from the flowers to the meal choices, were designed to reflect this I arrived by boat with my bridal party for the ceremony, which added to the excitement. My eldest son Nicholas walked me down the aisle and gave me away. We both felt very joyous that our children played a part in the ceremony and celebrations. My Rhetta dress was covered with frosted lace applique and had a Chantilly lace bodice, crepe skirt and cut-away back. I had my children’s and stepchildren’s names embroidered along the edge of the scalloped train and mine and David’s initials on the lace veil. My bouquet of roses and orchids reflected our combined Singaporean and British cultures. “After the official part, listening to each other’s personal vows for the first time was an unforgettable moment.” – Susan 42
