Your Devon and Cornwall Wedding - May/June 2025 (Issue 55)

The first Newquay Food Festival is taking place this July for lovers of the Cornish food scene. It’s coming to Killacourt on the 10th until the 13th of July 2025 with free entry. Overlooking Towan Beach, everyone is invited to join in for a weekend of unforgettable flavours, local producers and creatives, with a dash of seaside magic. Visitors can expect a jam-packed schedule of bands and musicians, plus a Chef Stage focused on fire-cooking, hosted by Andi Tuck, and sponsored by Kamado Joe. The creators of Newquay Food Festival are truly passionate about Cornish food and the creative arts culture. It’s no secret that Cornwall county boasts some of the best fresh produce, innovative chefs and creative talent that the UK has to offer. This event will provide a platform for the local food, drink and music communities to showcase their craft. What’s cooking? This year’s festival will bring a tasteful collection of hot-food vendors and local producers. From artisanal Cornish cheeses and fresh seafood straight from the boat, to exotic street food and remarkably good smashed-burgers, this festival offers something for everyone. Alongside a fully stocked bar of local beer and cider provided by St Ives Brewery, visitors can expect a variety of local producers bringing everything from hand-made chocolates to fresh bread and pastries, along with live fire-cooking demonstrations, tastings, and more! The Fire Theatre hosted by Andrew Tuck The all-new Fire Theatre will be a centrepiece of the festival showcasing some of the hottest culinary talents in the South West. Andrew Tuck, from Great British Menu, is head chef at The Tartan Fox by Adam Handling and will be hosting the Fire Theatre over the weekend in July, bringing his talented friends and top local chefs to the stage, sharing their techniques and trade secrets on how to cook over the flame. Expect live cooking, sizzling barbecue experiences, and interactive chef-led tastings. Live music and entertainment It’s not just about food. The Newquay Food Festival will also be brimming with live entertainment across the four days. From laid-back acoustic sets to high-energy Latino and Afro-Carribean bands, visitors can enjoy some of the best from the Cornish music scene for free. The stage will be live until 9 pm, so guests can dance, eat, and drink into the evening, making it the ultimate food-lover party by the sea. Event organiser Barney Farnworth says: “I’m very proud to have grown up in Cornwall, so supporting local businesses and independent creatives has become a passion. Newquay’s history is steeped in fishing culture, and its food scene is prevalent to this day. It’s about time this town had a summer celebration of food and music that it can call its own.” Event organiser Harry James Mills adds, “We are overwhelmed by the support of the community already. It would seem that everyone is very excited for Killacourt to be decorated with vibrant colours, tastes and enticing smells. Who wouldn’t be?!” www.newquayfoodfestival.com www.instagram.com/newquayfoodfestival A PIECE OF CAKE Emily Close, the owner and chief baker at Cornwall-based Baker Cakes specialises in wedding and celebration cakes, cupcakes and biscuits that are handmade to order. She reveals how this summer’s wedding cakes are all about flavours and details that tell a story, often linked to a special memory or loved one. She says, “While couples are still choosing the classics like vanilla, lemon, and chocolate flavours as well as rich fruit cake for their big-day bakes, modern favourites including white chocolate and raspberry-flavoured designs, or carrot cake, are also popular choices and offer something a bit different. After all, a special day deserves a special cake. Gluten-free and dairy-free options are also popular to ensure guests with specific dietary needs feel just as included and catered for.” www.baker-cake.co.uk www.instagram.com/baker_cake21 https://unsplash.com What’s on? www.jaketimms.com www.wildtidelove.com 46
