Your Devon and Cornwall Wedding - March/April 2024 (Issue 48)

CANONTEIGN FALLS, NEAR EXETER Home to one of England’s highest waterfalls, Canonteign Falls is a magnificent example of a Victorian folly set in 90 acres of ancient woodland on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park in Devon. The waterfalls themselves descend more than 70 metres through ferns and woods. At the base of the falls, the woodland gives way to meadows and lakes, making this one of the most spectacular venue settings in Devon. Canonteign Barn is surrounded by waterfalls, lakes, and ancient bluebell woodland making it the perfect site for a fairytale-inspired wedding and a photographer’s delight. There’s an area to the side of the barn with garden furniture that’s perfect for a drinks reception, a play area to the rear and a tarmacked access route. The Barn is a blank canvas that overlooks a stunning lily lake. It’s a simple wooden plank construction with a pitched roof creating a flexible space that can be tailored to each couple’s needs with a purpose-built bar in one corner, and moveable staging. It has a large barn door opening to the lake, another door opening to the side and a smaller set of doors next to the hard standing, where the caterers can set up with vehicle access. Ceremonies take place in The Pagoda, a Victorian structure that’s situated on a large jetty overlooking the lake providing an inspirational setting. The jetty can seat up to 85 guests, and with overflow on to the grass, it can accommodate up to 120 loved ones. The indoor ceremony option is inside the barn seating between 10 and 150 people. For an intimate, standing-only ceremony of up to 30 guests, with the waterfall as the backdrop, there’s the romantic Clampett Falls, a five-minute walk from the barn. The wedding breakfast and reception are hosted inside the barn for up to 150 guests seated. This number can be extended to 180 loved ones for the reception within the barn and up to 250 people when using a marquee to provide extra space. The area can also be sectioned off to create a more intimate atmosphere. The site offers accommodation in a stunning cottage that sleeps up to eight guests for a minimum of three nights. This cottage is spacious but cosy with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large eat-in kitchen, and a comfortable living area with TV and Wi-Fi, plus there’s a 5% discount for wedding clients.
