The local lovely has built its enviable reputation by offering exceptional service, high-quality flowers and an inclusive range of products that meet a variety of needs. The recent launch of the Bijou collection (a budgetfriendly range) was inspired by feedback from customers and designed to make its florals accessible to more people, more often. From weddings to sympathy flowers, everyday bouquets to large installations, the team brings passion and care to every creation. As an independent florist, it works hard to provide value, quality, and flexibility while staying commercially resilient in a challenging high street climate. AFFAIR A black-tie Located in their beloved Cheshire and close to where they met, Colshaw Hall was the dream venue for Bethany and Josh Images courtesy of Jess Yarwood Photography Although Bethany and Josh worked for the same company, they didn’t speak properly until they bumped into each other at the pub one Christmas Eve. They went on their first date a few weeks later and quickly realised they’d love each other forever. Christmas eve eight years later, to the day they met, Bethany returned home from a day out to find an aisle of petals and candles set up in their living room. “We had a very private, intimate proposal,” Bethany shares. “It was absolutely perfect in every way.” The couple had their hearts set on a countryside venue and Colshaw Hall being in their home county of Cheshire made it the perfect spot. “From the moment we visited, we knew we were going to get married there,” Bethany says. The date was set for 12th July, 2024. MONOCHROME MAGIC With plans for an elegant, black-tie affair underway the couple set about looking for styling elements to suit their black and white palette. The table plan and place names, complete with black bows, were simply and elegantly designed to suit, while one of the bride’s best friends baked a large heart-shaped cake, which she iced in black and white, and decorated with pearl detailing. Centrepieces featured white florals with hanging bauble tea lights. The bride’s bouquet featured white roses, white hydrangeas and eucalyptus. Meanwhile, the groom wore a buttonhole of hydrangea and orchid. The ceremony room was dressed by I Do Events Liverpool. “The setup was stunning,” Bethany remembers. “We had a large white florals on clear stands, with tall candles and petals along the side of the aisle.” THE PICTURE OF ELEGANCE Bethany always thought she’d go for a tight-fitting, fish-tail gown but when she tried on her dress, she surprised herself. The A-line silhouette with button detailing and low back didn’t fit the vision at all, but she immediately knew it was the one and loved how it made her feel like a princess. However, she still got to realise her vision in opting for a second, evening dress by Made With Love, beautifully embellished with a leg slit. Josh and his groomsmen wore tuxedos, while the bridesmaids were dressed in full-length, black, oneshoulder, fishtail, satin dresses by Australian brand Meshki. IT’S PARTY TIME! Violinist and pianist Craig Owen performed during the ceremony and reception. The couple also booked live singer Paddy Slater who comes highly recommended by them. “He got the party going before the meal was even finished!” Bethany shares. Later, Paddy was joined by a saxophonist, and they performed the newlyweds’ first dance song, Take Over The World by Courteeners. As the evening wore on the duo handed over to their DJ. MEMORABLE MOMENTS “Turning around and seeing my beautiful future wife walking down the aisle was my highlight,” Josh shares. After the ceremony, the two exchanged personal vows in one of the venue’s living rooms. “We were so happy we did this it meant we got to spend 15 minutes alone taking in the fact we’d just got married!” Bethany says. my heart Key to Ffion and Billy said “I do” at North Wales’ beautiful Talhenbont Hall in June 2025 Images courtesy of Heledd Roberts Photography REAL WEDDINGS 23

When Billy played rugby for Rygbi Gogledd Cymru and won man of the match, his prize was a BMW for the week from the club’s sponsors Halliwell Jones BMW, where Ffion worked. When he went to collect the keys from the dealership, Ffion was there to hand them over and the rest is history. Billy proposed to Ffion in Port Eynon South Wales on the beach where the couple have spent many a happy summer. “I booked Talhenbont Hall without Billy knowing because I loved it so much!” Ffion tells us. She went along to a private viewing with her bridesmaids and simply fell in love. “I loved the modern Coach House along with the traditional feel of the Main Hall – it was the best of both worlds,” she continues. “We were greeted by the lovely Alicia who made me feel instantly at ease.” On the day, the bride wore a classic white A-line gown, Cecilia by Eddy K, with oh-so on trend statement bow. It was the first she tried on and although she tried on several more after it, she kept returning to her first love – the one. Billy wore a tailored tux by Dyfed Menswear. “He always said he wanted to buy a made-to-measure tux for our wedding and that’s exactly what he did,” Ffion shares. His groomsmen were dressed to match. Meanwhile, the beautiful bridesmaids were dressed in stone-coloured gowns tailor-made for them by Bridesmaids by JB. 24

The couple opted for a classic, timeless feel for their day, selecting a neutral palette of white with hints of champagne. The ceremony aisle was lined with large hurricane lanterns, while the reception centrepieces featured single bud vases with white roses along with hurricane candles and tea lights. The bride and groom had some fun providing persoanlised mini tambourines as favours. These were used to welcome the newlyweds to their reception and were a massive hit among their loved ones who continued to put them to good use throughout the celebrations! “Everyone raved about the food,” Ffion says. “We provided plenty as we didn’t want guests to go hungry.” An hour of canapés preceded the threecourse wedding breakfast, and a pizza van served up a storm for the evening. Guests were also offered signature cocktails. Ffion’s choice was an Aperol Spritz, while Billy chose Penderyn Whisky and lemonade, his grandmother’s favourite. A trio of violins created a romantic ambience for the ceremony before the entertainment switched up a notch or two by the evening thanks to the DJ and photo booth for more snappy fun. The highlight of the day for Ffion was the speeches; there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The best man wrote his version of a popular Welsh song for the newlyweds and handed guests a copy allowing them to join in. Ffion has some top tips for her fellow brides: “Try to be as organised as possible with designated boxes for each table with stickers and a plan. Also, be patient and listen to each other, you’re both in this together.” REAL WEDDINGS 25

Pastel dreams This local shoot depicts the epitome of a romantic, summer, al fresco wedding Images courtesy of By Hannah Photography Ihad an image in my mind of an outdoor wedding with a fun, relaxed vibe and lots of flowers in soft pastel shades,” shoot coordinator Frances Browne from Meadow Lane Floral Design tells us. “I wanted to demonstrate how fresh flowers can transform a space, making it feel personal and unique to each couple.” So, she set about gathering a team to help her do just that. “I’d been following Swanley Meadows on Instagram for some time and knew it would be the perfect location for the shoot,” Frances explains. So, she got in touch with venue owner Jenny, who was up for it, but there was a catch. The only date available was just nine days away! Not one to shy away from a challenge, Frances spent that night reaching out to her dream collaborators and by the following morning had assembled her team. Luckily, the day of the shoot was gorgeous. “As I arrived at the venue the scenery took my breath away,” Frances remembers. “It was lovely to spend time in the sunshine getting creative with lots of other talented, local, wedding suppliers.” “ LOCAL SHOOT 29

Sustainable celebrations Control your carbon footprint with our eco-friendly wedding advice With around 250,000 weddings taking place every year, a frightening total of 3,625,000 tonnes of CO2 are emitted as a result, according to the Sustainable Wedding Alliance (sustainableweddingalliance.com). Indeed, an average wedding day in the UK generates a whopping 14.5 tonnes of CO2, whereas the annual per capita carbon emission is only 9.1 tonnes. The website further explains that food wastage is a significant issue with £488 worth wasted at every celebration, 65 per cent of a home’s annual total. What’s more, we’re told that 4,910 tonnes of un-recyclable plastic was used and left behind at weddings, an equivalent weight of 47 blue whales! If these shocking statistics scare you as much as they do us, you’ll no doubt want to do something about it when it comes to your own big day. The various solutions are actually quite simple, requiring just a little careful thought and planning. So, read on for our guide to organising a sustainable wedding from quick fixes to a wider strategy. Remember, every little helps. FASHION Much like the fast fashion crisis, where cheap clothes are purchased in staggering volumes, worn once and discarded into landfill, wedding dresses too are worn just for one day despite being at the opposite end of the investment scale. Buying a pre-loved gown or hiring are two solutions to this problem, ensuring the dress sees many more wears before it’s ultimately thrown away. For the gents, suit hire is already the more common option. Even if the groom and his party decide to purchase their suits, it’s generally easier for them to re-wear than a wedding gown is for the bride! However, going pre-loved isn’t for everyone. You may well have your heart set on one of the latest designs, or don’t like the idea that someone has worn your dress before you, and we don’t blame you. The sustainably minded should seek out bridal designers that share the same ethos. Sabina Motasem, for example, is a creator of eco-luxe bridalwear, while Rolling in Roses focuses on handmade, slow bridal fashion. When the big-day is over, keep your gown to hand down to future generations, sell or donate. When it comes to the bridesmaids’ dresses, why not send them out to shop for something they’ll wear again and again, including a brief that allows you to manage cohesion. FAVOURS Carefully consider your wedding favours as this is often a culprit for single use plastics that get left behind or chucked. Many couples now decide to skip this tradition altogether or opt for something consumable. We love anything edible or drinkable such as palette fitting macarons or personalised iced cookies which can double up as place names for even more sustainable care. Little bottles of booze also go down a treat and can be used during speeches to toast your happiness - “We tied the knot, now take a shot.” Another excellent idea is donating to charity in lieu of favours. Include a note on your place names, menus or table numbers to tell guests about the chosen charity you’ve donated to in their names. Many will offer charity pins as favours or attached to place cards as a thank you. Endless Summer, sabinamotasem.com unsplash.com@kaboompics 34

FLOWERS Wedding flowers can leave quite the carbon footprint when imported from overseas. To avoid this, look for a local florist that sources its beautiful blooms domestically from a local grower. You could even go direct to the source and get your flowers from a flower farm. Check out flowersfromthefarm.co.uk where you can find a directory of members near to you. Sourcing locally does mean you’ll be restricted to British blooms that are in season at the time of your wedding, but that’s no bad thing. Domestic varieties are some of the most fitting for weddings, think anemones, ranunculus and hyacinths to name just a few, not to mention the ever-popular peony. You can also search for a local florist who has sustainability at its heart, using floristry methods that are kind to the environment. For example, they might avoid the use of oasis in favour of moss or wool blocks. Repurposing is a key word here too. Think about how you can reuse your arrangements throughout the day. Meadow aisle arrangements can be moved to the reception tables, or a floral arch can double as a top table backdrop. Best of all, this saves you money too. Finally, consider how you can give your blooms a life beyond the big day. Some florists will offer you a breakdown service, where they’ll bunch up the flowers to gift to loved ones. You can also donate them to a local care home for example to brighten the day of its residents. And why not ensure your bridal bouquet lasts a lifetime and have it preserved in resin? Hiring faux flowers are also an option as is opting for dried flowers, just be careful to check out the process used to dry them. CAKE When it comes to the big-day bake, it’s the potential for wastage that’s cause for concern. If you want a multi-tier showstopper but that’ll mean more cake than your guests could ever get through, talk to your cake-maker about using false tiers iced to look like the real thing but able to be used again. Otherwise, seek advice on the size of cake you’ll need for your guests, don’t over order. Cake designers have the perfect formula for calculating how much you’ll need, and trust us, it’s less than you think. If you’re still left with cake at the end of the night, provide little recyclable boxes for guests to take some home with them. The two of you may also wish to set aside a tier to take home and freeze to enjoy later. As with many other elements of a sustainable wedding, shop local to cut down the miles your cake has to travel and ask your baker about their methods. For instance, do they use locally sourced, seasonal and organic ingredients? unsplash.com@kaboompics unsplash.com@kristycruzm_ CONFETTI You’d certainly be forgiven for not wanting to forgo your confetti shot. First-things-first though, check on your venue’s policy when it comes to the confetti throw, as some don’t allow it or have sustainability related stipulations. So, ensure as your guests reach for a handful of something to chuck at you that it’s biodegradable as well as romantic! Rose petals and dried lavender are lovely choices or make your own by punching out shapes from fallen leaves - a dream for autumn weddings. Another magical option is to provide eco-friendly bubble solution, allowing guests to shower you in a veil of pretty bubbles. Grow Your Own Confetti Garden, £30, glut.co.uk SUSTAINABILITY 35

CATERING ‘Local’ is the key word again here. So, find out how your caterer sources its ingredients. If they use meat and produce from local farms this is the one for you! Seasonal menus are also a must, making sure the ingredients are readily available nearby without the need for spending precious air miles importing produce. Asparagus in the spring, berries in the summer and root veg in the autumn are all delicious and sustainable choices. So, ask your caterer whether they can supply a menu using 80 to 100 per cent UK seasonal ingredients. Consider vegan, plant-based options as these naturally have a much lower carbon and water footprint. Choosing just one plantbased meal for your menu can go a long way to reducing carbon emissions. Avoid food waste as much as possible. If guests drop out at the last minute, update your caterer as soon as you can. If it’s already too late to cut the meal, offer it to an extra supplier not already sunsplash.com@artsyvibes STATIONERY Going digital is the most sustainable method here. Send out e-save-the-dates and e-invites and set up a wedding website containing all the information your guests will need as well as for the RSVPs, eliminating the need for printing, paper and postage. You may choose to go entirely digital or as a combination with traditional methods to cut down on stationery. The latter is the most viable option if you don’t have the e-mail addresses for everyone. If you are using paper, look for 100 per cent recycled products, FSC-certified paper, biodegradable options, or our favourite seed paper that can be planted after use. Also, check out what printing methods your stationer uses. Look out for soy- or vegetable-based inks and avoid foil, laminated finished and any glitter or plastic embellishments. When it comes to on-the-day stationery such as your signage, hire it to prevent it hitting landfill post celebrations. DECOR Hiring a professional venue stylist will, by and large, see you have this covered. They’ll have an entire showroom of goodies they can use to style your venue according to your vision, making sure it looks 10-out-of-10, before taking it all back at the end of the day to do the same for another lucky couple. There’s zero waste in this method. DIY may sound sustainable, but is it really? Carefully consider what will happen to your styling elements you’ve meticulously crafted after the big day. If the answer is, “Well, they’ll get thrown away,” pause for further thought. If you’re sourcing heaps of non-sustainable craft materials with the end result of dumping the creation after a day’s use, this isn’t the eco-conscious way forward. A good rule of thumb is to stop and question yourself: “Am I going to use this again?” If not, the answer is to hire it. unsplash.com@sintijasandore 36

THE VENUE When researching wedding venues looking into their sustainability policies and practices will get you a long way to ensuring your wedding is as eco-friendly as possible, while taking much of the effort out of your hands. Here’s what you’ll be keeping an eye out for: • Location Stay local to minimise guest and vendor travel • Energy The venue will use renewable energy or energy-efficient systems • Water It will conserve water with eco-plumbing • Waste Recyling, composting and ban on single-use plastics. • Decor It will encourage the use of reusable decor, likely encouraging to hire rather than buy. • Community It will support its local economy or sustainable causes. • Credentials The venue will proudly display its green certifications and have a transparent, easy-to-find sustainability policy. Look out for BCorp, Green Tourism or ISO 14001 certification. They may also be a member of the Sustainable Wedding Alliance. unsplash.com@scottwebb TRANSPORT The easiest way to guarantee eco-friendly transport is to host your ceremony and reception in a single location, cutting down on multiple journeys in one day. Alternatively, if you’re saying “I do” in church, try to find a reception space within walking distance or as close as possible. Consider your guests’ journeys when deciding on your location. Is it within easy reach of local transport links? Not only is this eco-friendly, it also means they can leave the car at home and enjoy a drink with you if they wish. Use your wedding website to set up a carpool sign-up and organise group leaders to organise lifts from the same area. If you are opting for multiple locations, put on group transport for your guests to get them from A to B with least impact on the environment. We love a red routemaster or retro charabanc for a super-fun trip. You can also offer guests a shuttle bus service from the venue to hotel or train station to cut down on multiple carbon-emitting taxis. For your own wedding vehicle, go low-carbon. Seek out an electric or hybrid vehicle or a vintage car running on biofuel. Alternatively, a horse and carriage is oh-so romantic, super photogenic and offers a truly memorable experience. Sometimes, travelling long distances is unavoidable, especially if you have guests attending from overseas. No problem, just look for a way to offset their carbon emissions. From £6.99 per month, carbonneutralbritain.org allows you to offset your annual carbon footprint through various projects. SUSTAINABILITY 37
