Q&A Fashion Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals SUITS YOU! Neither my partner nor I really want to wear wedding dresses on our special day, as we don’t feel it would be very ‘us’, and we don’t want to feel self-conscious. Can you suggest an alternative to help us feel comfortable and our big-day best? Stephanie Corbyn, senior tailor at King & Allen Bespoke Tailors (https://kingandallen.co.uk) says: It’s amazing how many people think they have to wear a dress as tradition requires it but this is absolutely not true. Your wedding day should be the ultimate moment to show up as your beautiful original self, without all the rules and regulations that come with other people’s expectations of you or what a traditional wedding looks like. The beauty of bespoke tailoring, at least the way we approach it at King & Allen, is that we start from a desire to truly understand what the client wants, what their personality is and how they like to express themselves. We then take this insight and begin the creative process, which involves working through cloth, trim and various style choices to bring their vision to life. That may come in the shape of a suit, but it could also be a skirt and jacket, or even a tailored dress. We can create design-led pieces and as long as the concept sits within the scope of tailoring, the possibilities are endless: from ivory jumpsuits and wedding capes to celebratory wool-silk blends or a touch of glitter. The beauty of wearing something unapologetically you, means you won’t need to worry about anything on your big day other than remembering the rings. PERFECT BALANCE I have an apple-shaped figure and am struggling to know what silhouette will suit me. What can you suggest I look for? Joanne Maloney from A Bridal Story (www.abridalstory.co.uk) says: A-line or ballgowns work perfectly on an apple-shaped body as they bring balance to your hip area and draw attention to your waist giving it a cinched-in look. We’d also suggest looking at a neckline that will open up your chest and bust area, such as a sweetheart, scoop or V-neck. Again, this will bring overall balance to your silhouette and will smooth the bust area, while bringing focus to your waist. If you’re larger on the bust, a dress with a good internal structure will be a must. No matter what your shape, your bridal stylist will have plenty of options for you to try that will highlight your best assets, give you a balanced shape and make you feel like a million dollars! © @maxseigel 68
