Justin Mullender, joint owner of Pig & Whistle Restaurant (with his husband Brendan) talks to An Essex Wedding Magazine about how intimate weddings are bringing a new sense of warmth and style to the big day. Do you think intimate weddings are a long-term shift or more of a current trend? We see it as a long-term shift rather than a passing trend. Couples seem to be thinking more about how they spend their budget and that naturally leans towards smaller, more meaningful celebrations. An intimate wedding at somewhere like Pig & Whistle Restaurant, allows couples to focus on what actually matters to them, whether that’s exceptional food, a beautiful setting, or simply being present with only their closest friends and family. Many couples are placing greater emphasis on food and drink—how has that influenced the way venues design their wedding experiences? Food and drink have really moved to the centre of the wedding experience. It’s no longer just one part of the day, it’s often the defining part of it, and that’s why couples choose Pig & Whistle Restaurant. Our AA 2 Rossette awards for culinary excellence mean that couples can design their wedding much more like a dining experience than a function. One that really stands out was a 30-guest wedding where the couple wanted the day to feel like an elegant, relaxed dinner party from start to finish. The ceremony took place indoors under our blossom and fairylit ceiling, followed by champagne on the terrace, then three courses including panfried scallops, lamb best end and lemon curd with homemade beeswax ice cream, all from our seasonal menus. IN EVERY DETAIL Elegance A picture-perfect proposal abroad led to a beautifully curated black-tie wedding at Braxted Park Estate Images courtesy of Elizabeth Jayne Weddings Grant chose the breathtaking setting of Santorini for a deeply meaningful proposal, arriving at a moment when the couple had only recently endured personal heartbreak. Hoping to restore a sense of joy and create a new, uplifting chapter, he planned an experience that was both intimate and unforgettable - and it proved to be exactly what they needed. The evening unfolded at a beautiful restaurant, where the couple, dressed elegantly in white, embraced the significance of the occasion. As Suzi stepped onto the balcony, she was met with a romantic scene: a pathway of rose petals underfoot, a singer performing their wedding song on guitar, and a videographer discreetly capturing every precious second. The balcony offered impressive views of the mountains, bathed in golden light. There, they shared an intimate dinner, watching the sun dip below the horizon. Over those next hours they called their closest friends and family, joyfully sharing the news of their engagement. Now it was time to set the date! They booked in to view Braxted Park Estate and as soon as they drove down the impressive driveway they knew it was something special. It was a yes from both and without hesitation, they secured 7th August 2025 with the Braxted team, marking the beginning of their journey to becoming Mr and Mrs Morris. SETTING THE SCENE A black-tie dress code set the tone for the day. Classic elegance was key, with black cutlery, black decor, sophisticated black bridesmaids’ gowns and pure white flowers. Suzi wore an Alberto Palatchi dress. She recalls, “I saw it on Instagram before I was engaged and fell in love with it so enquired about the timescales and it was at least a year to come in. So, the second I got engaged I messaged them to book an appointment. It was a four-hour drive from me! I tried three dresses on whilst I was there but the second I put my coveted dress on I was so emotional. I just knew it was the one; my friends cried - it couldn’t have been more me.” Not forgetting the leading man, Grant looked dapper in a double breasted custom black tuxedo, whist his groomsmen also fitted the brief in black tuxedos. TIME TO CELEBRATE Guests were entertained with two singers over the duration of the day; one for the wedding breakfast and one for the evening. Adding to the excitement, there was also a magician, a ‘sip and solve’ game, a caricature artist, a percussionist and a saxophonist. Suzi and Grant had pre-chosen a three-course meal for the wedding breakfast, then in the evening pizzas and bacon and sausage baps were served for a midnight snack. Suzi adds, “I also hired a pancake company who freshly made mini pancakes in the evening with a selection of toppings such as strawberries with a chocolate sauce tap. They tasted amazing and they designed the cart with me to match our wedding theme perfectly!” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “As much as I loved every moment of the day, my favourite part of weddings is always the speeches. This was no exception, I just loved every second, hearing the people I love most talking about our memories. Then the party was a very close second!” REAL WEDDINGS 25

Elif and Owen met whilst studying at the University of Essex where what began as a simple connection slowly blossomed into something truly special. In October 2022, Owen proposed whilst on a walk in Shotley Marina (one of their favourite spots for a walk). Elif remembers, “It was a beautiful, sunny day and halfway through our walk, Owen got down on one knee and popped the question. He’d booked a table for lunch at Suffolk Food Hall and surprised me with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers – it was so romantic.” Wedding planning commenced and Owen Brown married Elif Kandemir-Brown on 20th September 2025 at Hedingham Castle. LOCATION The couple only viewed one venue – Hedingham Castle. The couple always knew they wanted somewhere historic and this ticked every box – especially the fact that you could host the ceremony and reception at the same location. Elif laughs, “When we first went to view the venue, Sarah at Hedingham told us that she had never seen someone (Owen) so happy to be there and that’s how we knew it was the one!” SETTING THE SCENE Elif and Owen wanted to embrace the beautiful character of the venue, with the ceremony taking place in the historic Norman keep and the reception held in the elegant Queen Anne–style red-brick mansion. To complement these timeless surroundings, they chose a soft colour palette of blush pink, sage green and white, finished with delicate touches of gold. 40
Elif adds, “We didn’t rely too much on styling but leant into the period features within the castle, the grand feel of the mansion and the beautifully kept gardens – the venue did most of the talking! In terms of the flowers, we left all floral and styling decisions to our very talented florist, Flores UK. We had so many compliments on the blooms. Cheryl did such a fabulous job at bringing our vision to life.” DRESSED TO IMPRESS Elif wore ‘Louise’ by Jenny Yoo. She says, “I had seen the dress on other brides on social media and absolutely loved the look of it. It was equal parts classic and vintage and I thought the sleeves were the best I had seen on a dress! It complemented the venue really well.” Owen wore a traditional morning suit which he hired from Coes in Ipswich. He paired the suit with a green cravat and an ivory waistcoat. The groomsmen also opted for traditional morning suits, but with pink cravats. TIME TO CELEBRATE The happy couple set the tone for the day with a string trio, who performed a beautiful selection of music as the celebrations unfolded. During the wedding breakfast, heartfelt and humorous speeches from loved ones kept guests thoroughly entertained, bringing plenty of laughter to the room. And as the evening celebrations began, a DJ took over, ensuring the dancefloor stayed lively well into the night. WORDS OF WISDOM “Enjoy the process of planning a wedding.
