Writing this issue’s editor’s letter on one of the hottest days of the year, means all I can think about is the heat! Although, I’m not moaning like a typical Brit saying it’s too hot, I was cold in Australia so for me, heat-Goldilocks, it’s just right! For summer nuptials, yes you may want the sunshine, but you don’t want the heat as it leads to all sorts of scenarios you may not have thought about: melting cakes, make-up and guests for a start! So, it’s not just wet-weather contingency plans you need to invest time in, but also humid heatwaves need a Plan A, B and C. Does the venue have shade outside? Can you create any if not? Should you provide folding fans? Are there enough refreshments to keep guests hydrated? When it comes to your outfit, can you remove a layer of the underskirt to keep cool, or change your footwear for a heeled sandal instead? Some top tips for your bridal look, carry blotting paper with you for sweaty faces, make sure you secure make-up in place with a setting spray and a handheld fan in your clutch bag could work wonders when you need a minute to cool down! Finally, if you were planning on involving your pet in your wedding day, then chat to your chaperone service about the best ways to keep them comfortable whatever the weather. Ooh is that the time, Pimms o’clock! Until next time... Your North West Wedding is solely owned, published and designed by Ellis Media and Events Ltd. IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE...PLAY ON! Joanne and Martin’s wedding had a classic theme with a blue and white colour palette Images courtesy of Fish2 Photography 18

Joanne and Martin Foster met in traditional fashion through friends on a pub crawl! “We bonded over our love of music and spent early dates going to see live music and bands locally,” shares Joanne. After romance blossomed, a relationship began and a young family started, Martin’s surprise proposal for Joanne was on a pram walk with their baby daughter. “He dropped down on one knee on a quaint bridge with the water rushing by underneath,” recalls Joanne. “He did however open the box upside down and so there was a bit of a scramble to make sure the ring didn’t fall out into the river!” Luckily that didn’t happen, and Joanne was delighted with the antique-looking diamond and sapphire ring. It was a sunny summer afternoon, and the happy couple celebrated by going for a drink in their local and meeting friends there – just like how they met! “We are not into big or loud gestures, so this was perfect in every way,” adds Joanne. “Unfortunately, my cancer diagnosis the following month meant the wedding planning had to be delayed, though when this restarted the following year, it felt extra special given everything we had been through as a newly engaged couple with a small baby!” The big date was set, 13th July 2024 with the ceremony held at Croston St Michael’s and All Angels Church, followed by a reception hosted at Croston Old School. Here we find out more about their day... SETTING THE SCENE With a shared love of quaint, picturesque, riverside settings, Croston Old School ticked all the boxes for Joanne and Martin; with the added bonus the venue was on the couple’s doorstep. “It was very much a beautiful blank canvas that we could turn into our own for the day,” shares Joanne. For the finer details, the couple opted for a donation card for the MS Society for each guest, in honour of Martin’s late mum, Maureen, which were their table favours and placenames. Also on the tables were floral displays matching the theme, while the table plan itself was a creation of flowers and fairylights. For the bouquet and buttonholes, supplied by The Window Box, these were in blue, white and green hues secured with hessian. The big-day bake was a traditional three-tier fruitcake decorated with flowers and a hessian and lace ribbon; while the rest of the food provided included an afternoon tea comprising handmade savouries and cakes, then fish and chips in the evening – the chippy van was a real hit with the guests! Finally, the couple travelled in a cream, vintage Rolls Royce which also provided picture-perfect photo opportunities. LOOKING THE PART Keeping her bridal look classic, Joanne opted for a white, traditional, lace dress called Hera. Martin also kept it classic, in a smart navy suit teamed with a dusty blue tie and buttonhole; this look was mirrored in the groomsmens’ attire and complemented by the bridesmaids’ dresses that matched the style of the bride’s dress, but the blue accents of the groom’s suit. The flowergirls had white lace dresses completing the on-the-day colour palette. TIME TO CELEBRATE Music has played an important role in the couple’s journey together, so it was only apt that they would play their favourite songs throughout the day, “Each one had a special meaning or memory linking back to our early relationship to present day,” shares Joanne. “We had a saxophonist/DJ combo for the evening which the guests loved! They played both old classics and more modern dance-style music and were fabulous. “We also hired a wedding illustrator, and she was great! Guests loved having their pictures painted and went to the stall throughout the afternoon to guess which guest featured in the completed ones. It was unique and brilliant.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS On the day, the couple were surprised at how calm and relaxed they both felt; they were relieved to have finally been able to get married after the previous year 19 REAL WEDDINGS

of Joanne having her chemotherapy and treatment. “We felt emotional and lucky to be able to celebrate with those closest to us,” adds Joanne. “We also christened our daughter following our marriage ceremony in church, and she went wild when the vicar wet her head. She growled at him and frowned – it was really funny – although I’m sure she didn’t think so! She soon cheered up when she clapped eyes on the afternoon tea and cakes!” A standout help on the day was Lisa Lilley, manager at Croston Old School, “she was such an excellent help both in the lead up and on the day itself. Her organisations skills are second to none and she helped us to really relax into it and enjoy ourselves rather than be preoccupied with whether our guests were having fun,” adds Joanne. HONEYMOON The Lakes District is a special place for the couple, so post-wedding they enjoyed a short break in Ambleside. “It was lovely; we enjoyed walking, shopping and eating out. We went on a family holiday to Gran Canaria a few months after with our wedding gift money and had a wonderful time. We were originally due to go to earlier; however, our daughter woke up with chickenpox the day prior to flying so we had to postpone!” TOP TIP “Try to be mindful and ‘in the moment’ as much as you can. Notice the detail and sit back to take in the room when having the wedding breakfast. Focus on each part of the day as it unfolds rather than thinking too far ahead and not being fully present. It’s amazing what you actually spot and remember when doing this.” – Joanne REAL WEDDINGS 21

Forever LOVE Emma and Siobhan had a day of celebrating love, Manchester and Dolly Parton Images courtesy of Emma Beaumont Photography 24

Emma and Siobhan met in modern fashion, on an online dating app! “Emma had recently been catfished and didn’t hold out much hope for online dating anymore,” shares Siobhan. “We found out later we actually had a mutual friend – so they could have introduced us!” For their first date, the pair headed to The Castle pub on Oldham Street in Manchester city centre. “We’re very different personality wise, but both hold the same values which is important so hit it off straight away.” Emma proposed to Siobhan on their summer holiday in August 2023, outside the small cottage they’d rented in the Loire Valley, France. “At the time our daughter was just one. We were both of the opinion that marriage wasn’t for us, but Emma changed her mind after making a podcast earlier that year for BBC Sounds called ‘Danny Beard on love and same sex marriage’. Interviewing different LGBT couples from all over the country made her realise how important and beautiful marriage could be.” On the day, after a lovely barbecue and dessert Emma made Siobhan close her eyes and when she opened them, she was on one knee with her grandma’s engagement ring. “Despite being in a wine region Emma made a rash purchase in a corner store and we celebrated with the worst wine ever!” laughs Siobhan. “We bought Champagne a few days later and celebrated again!” The big date was set, 28th October 2024, with Salford Lads Club providing the backdrop for the ceremony and The Black Friar, Salford, setting the scene for the reception after the ’I dos’. SETTING THE SCENE Emma and Siobhan loved Salford Lads Club from the moment they went in. “The volunteers were brilliant – and we especially loved how the money from our wedding would go to a real club for young people that would benefit young girls and boys in the Salford area.” shares Siobhan. “The building is also gorgeous and close to REAL WEDDINGS 25

Manchester city centre. We also had a few guests with mobility problems, and they have great accessibility. It didn’t hurt that we were big Smiths fans back in the day, and the building is so iconic for many other reasons too. It’s also worth mentioning that as a same sex couple – even if we’d wanted to get married in a church (we didn’t) we wouldn’t be allowed to as it’s against the law.” Wanting to create the day exactly how they envisioned, Emma and Siobhan were innovative when it came to the finer details of their day, along with the help of loved ones. “The bouquets were a mix of plastic flowers and leaves from a friend’s garden; friends Steve, Karl and Caroline helped decorate one of the rooms with rainbow umbrellas and bunting to name but a couple of ways guests helped.” Two double-decker buses took guests to The Black Friar pub where the evening’s entertainment took place. “The buses had our names on the front, and we booked two tour guides to give our guests a tour of Manchester first. My friend John Ryan is a tour guide so his present to us was planning and doing the tour. The route included places that were significant to us – such as Manchester’s gay village, Gaydio and the pub where we first met.” For catering, guests had an informal offering of sandwiches, cakes and plenty of fizz at the club and then a full hot buffet at The Black Friar later in the evening. “The food there is outstanding, and we were able to order different ‘stations’ like American, Asian and a ’skewer’ station,” adds Siobhan. In terms of favours, packets of rose petal confetti from the charity Refuge was given on each seat; a charity that supports women who are victims of domestic violence. “We also gave everyone a gift of a rainbow broach from Cancer Research UK. The rainbow reminded people they were at a gay wedding, and it was also a very important charity for us to support. Emma lost her sister to breast cancer in 2020 and although she misses her every single day, she felt her absence on her wedding day especially,” shares Siobhan. LOOKING THE PART Emma looked stunning on the big day in a white jump suit from Reiss and zebra-print Dr. Martens sandals that were bought by best man Chris Holliday. Siobhan, went all-out with no less than three wedding dresses as she couldn’t make her mind up. “One was from the Bury hospice bridal charity shop, and two (including the one I eventually wore) were from Vinted!” Siobhan teamed her dresses with DMs as did their daughter, Niamh, who was two at the time, and wore a flowergirl dress. The bridesmaids wore a mix of purple and green dresses – suffragette colours – as a nod to Manchester’s historical past! TIME TO CELEBRATE As well as a disco, the couple also had a Dolly Parton impersonator Hello Dolly, aka Kay Molyneaux. “She was the best singer! She went down a storm. Everybody loves Dolly Parton and she really was the next best thing. And from Wigan!” 26

To have all my friends and family in one room felt so, so special. We could feel the love resonating around the room. My dad spent a load of money on my 21st birthday party because he never thought he’d have to pay for a wedding as he (like the rest of us) never imagined a time when gay marriage would be legal. To have him walk me down the aisle was really special for both of us. Siobhan was walked down the aisle by her best friend Ciara.” And a standout moment for the pair? “Hearing everybody cooing and laughing as our daughter went down the aisle first was a really magic moment,” adds Emma. “We’ve since watched it back on video and it’s so special. Niamh has Down’s syndrome so even though she was two-and-a-half she wasn’t yet walking, she went down the aisle on a pink trike and the best man had to be at the other end to coax her down!” Siobhan’s mum surprised guests by sharing Siobhan’s coming out story – which involved her disturbing her important viewing of an episode of Coronation Street! “She then surprised us again by bursting into song at the end of her speech!” laughs Emma. “The best man also shared a story about how I had texted him saying I was cooking for my lover and that she was steak-worthy!” The happy couple were thrilled when their friend Carl Austin-Behan offered to marry them. “He stepped in at the last-minute and, as a former lord mayor of Manchester, he had permission to conduct a wedding in Salford. He made it extra special and much more personal to us. And importantly he made it more gay and a celebration of queer love.” “Finally, a big thank you too to our friend Tally Bookbinder who’s a TV and film makeup artist – but did our hair and make-up as a wedding gift.” “Do what’s right for you. We wanted an urban, queer and relaxed wedding that was fun – so that’s what we did!” - Emma REAL WEDDINGS 27

2026 th yea fo SUSTAINABLE WEDDINGS Couples are rethinking how they celebrate love without creating unnecessary waste. From single-use decorations and dresses to imported cut flowers, the carbon footprint cost of the big day can add up quickly. Small shifts – like renting instead of buying – can make a big environmental impact. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, renting allows you to enjoy higher-quality items for a fraction of their purchase price, freeing up budget for other parts of your wedding! This concept isn’t new; dress boutiques and wedding stylists have long offered rental gowns and accessories. However, this recent shift in consumer demand has inspired a far greater range of options, catering to every budget. Pioneering this change in the floristry world is Rosie from Rosedale Botanics: “My plants are grown in-house and used across multiple projects, meaning no air-miles and zero waste.” Visit rosedalebotanics.co.uk Want a natural wedding? City lovin’ Local suppliers collaborated on this Urban Garden-themed shoot, to showcase the creativity in the city Images courtesy of Robyn at Bobtale Photography Shoot coordinator Sarah, of North & Flower, shares her inspiration, “The concept was born from the idea of bringing together two worlds — the charm of nature and the character of the city. Set in the heart of Salford at The Black Friar, we were drawn to the idea of an urban garden, leafy, intimate, and a little unexpected. We wanted to soften the industrial edges of the city with wild foliage, candlelight, and rich, earthy tones, creating a space that felt both grounded and romantic. “The look was all about contrast; a modern, playful bride in a fun, textured dress with bold accessories, cool shoes, and natural make-up, set against a backdrop of layered greenery and warm, heritage interiors. Every element had a sense of personality: oversized details, layered textures, and a balance between relaxed and refined. “The whole shoot came together as a celebration of individuality; for couples who love the city, but crave something green, characterful, and a little bit different.” – enjoy! 31 STYLED SHOOT

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT 35 Time to get the party started! Check out our top tips for securing entertainment Pump up the jam The final step to make your wedding feel like one big party is the entertainment. Booking the right act could make or break the vibe you’ve been building. So, let’s go through the different types of entertainment you can get, our tips for making it blend with your day, and not forgetting the all-important first dance recommendations. unsplash.com/zanepersaud josephtwo.smugmug.com MUSIC This is self-explanatory and includes all of the classics like singers, bands, pianist, DJ, and saxophonist. Although, thanks to the rise of the Bridgerton fanbase, there has been a notable increase in string quartet and harpist bookings! All of these styles of entertainment can work through any portion of the day and can be moulded to fit most themes. A lot of the more classical musicians can lend themselves to contemporary songs (once again, the Bridgerton effect). PERFORMERS Here is where you can inject a lot of your personality! Wedding performers can be anything from magicians, caricature artists, live drawing artist, singing waiters, or even comedians. This is completely down to you and what inspires you at the time. You can either take it seriously or have a bit of fun, whatever suits the vibe of your wedding. CRÉCHE/SOFT PLAY A lot of couples choose to have children in attendance on their big day, and whilst it is a beautiful thing to share the love with them, they do have extra entertainment needs. Whilst the adults are enjoying the cocktails or having a chat, the children may end up bored and restless. To avoid any tantrums, it would be worth booking créche services or soft play hire to keep the little ones happy. Not only would it be less stress for the parents, but it means you won’t have to worry about any screaming during the speeches or your first dance. unsplash.com/joshuaearle PETTING ZOO Now, this one can vary depending on venues and their rules. Some venues come with furry friends already in residence, if so then you’re on to a winner! Other venues are pretty relaxed with the addition of petting zoos to wedding days, however, some may just flat-out refuse. We can understand a no, especially if it’s coming from a venue that relies on its manicured gardens. So, always check with your venue first before booking your big-day supplier. OUTDOOR GAMES We will touch on more outdoor activities in our ‘Hired Props’ section, but here we outline other activities you can include. If you want your wedding to feel like a massive party, then why not turn it into a fair ground? Your wedding could be the festival of the season with fun games, cotton candy, and small rides. It perhaps requires slightly more planning, to ensure the venue can handle the extra machinery, and ensuring it can all be set up on time – but it’s worth the effort. First and foremost, you’ll need to check with the venue before you book anything! If you can pull it off, then the wedding album will look epic, and your guests will dream about it for months to come. If you want a fun element but don’t want to organise a funfair, why not include crazy golf? Again, you will need to check with the venue that this is a possibility, but this should be easier to implement. You could even run a competition where the person with the best score gets a free drink or prize from the newlyweds.

36 @ rawe.reality stillsbyliz.myportfolio.com SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LOVE We’ve all seen the passing trends of wedding playlists and first dance songs – Ed Sheeran took the crown for years – but in case you’re wondering what the current trends are (according to Spotify), here’s a list of some of the current wedding top hits: Ordinary by Alex Warren (wedding version) A Thousand Years by Christina Perri All my Love by Coldplay It Had to be You by Ray Charles Die with a Smile by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars At Last by Etta James Lover By Taylor Swift HIRED PROPS We’re talking bouncy castles, crazy golf, a coconut shy, egg and spoon races, croquet, giant chess or jenga – the types of garden games you would play as a kid. Everyone is all about incorporating nostalgia to their lives these days, so entertainment like this would not only go down a storm but provide great pictures for the album! DIY STATIONS DIY stands at weddings have seen a popularity spike, as more couples are trying to get their guests involved in the big day. If you’re looking to add DIY bars, then there are plenty of ideas to play around with. Build-your-own cocktail stations have been incredibly popular over the previous years, as they enable guests to jazz up their drinks; add a drink topper designed with your wedding logo, edible glitter/flowers, fun colours and lots of other things too. It’s a great talking point and an opportunity to test their creativity! On this creative note, couples have also offered chances for guests to craft things on the wedding day, such as wreath making, tattoo bars and pottery painting! All of which can be well-catered to suit your guests and their personal flair. To bring the festival vibe to your special day, consider glitter bars! They’re super fun and could be personalised to your wedding colour scheme – I’m sure this could turn quite comical when the drinks have been flowing. GAME TABLES There has been a notable rise in people falling back in love with board games, card games, and everything in-between! I’m a big fan of card games and will always bring one or two with me when I travel or see friends. This can be easily incorporated into your wedding day through a games table; and could include casino-style game tables, Mr and Mrs battles, a pub quiz, and any other boardgames that speak to you. This style of wedding entertainment is another great chance for you to add personal flair and show off ways you and your partner like to have fun.
